Newcastle Jets vs Western Sydney Wanderers Preview & Prediction
All the stats and recent trends point to a Newcastle win and plenty of goals in this clash, but I’m backing a complete 180 and believe the Wanderers will be taking all three points in a dour affair on Friday night.
It’s been a nightmare off-season for the Jets and things have gotten progressively worse since the start of the season just a week ago.
Indeed, the Jets kicked off their new A-League campaign by going down 1-0 to bitter rivals Central Coast on New Year’s Eve, while Martin Lee had his ownership terminated during the week, with Newcastle now owned by a consortium of fellow A-League clubs, including Sydney FC, Western United and their opponents on Friday night, the Wanderers.
Newcastle are an ageing club and looked toothless in their loss to the Mariners, with Angus Thurgate’s strike that hit the woodwork the closest they got to scoring.
Meanwhile, the Wanderers were also kept scoreless in their opening defeat to new boys Macarthur, but they were unlucky not to find the back of the net.
Adam Federici made a number of sensational saves to deny the Wanderers, while a deflected goal from a free-kick was ultimately the difference between the sides.
There’s added spice in this clash – even before the ownership news – with former coach Carl Robinson and winger Bernie Ibini now at the Wanderers. Their departure was controversial and didn’t go down well with fans and management, but in hindsight, you can’t blame the pair for wanting to leave the Hunter.
The Jets may have dominated this fixture in recent times, but they appear to be in shambles right now. The Wanderers are excellent value to get off the mark here.
