Western Sydney Wanderers vs Newcastle Jets Preview & Prediction

Time is running out for the Western Sydney Wanderers and Newcastle Jets, with both teams needing a miracle to make the top six.

Western Sydney are almost certainly out of the race after a run of four draws from their last five games has left them 10 points adrift of Macarthur FC in sixth with just one game in hand.

Newcastle have a tiny chance, but they are seven points behind Macarthur with a game in hand and realistically need to win all of their five remaining fixtures to sneak a finals position.

The Jets have played some tremendous football in patches this season, with Daniel Penha and Beka Mikeltadze providing some memorable moments, but unfortunately consistency and defence has remained a lingering issue throughout the season.

Arthur Papas’ side had a chance to make some ground on the top six over the weekend, but they fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Melbourne Victory, conceding in the first five and final five minutes.

Meanwhile, the Wanderers just haven’t been able to get going all season in what has turned into another disappointing campaign.

Just five wins from 21 games simply won’t do for the Wanderers and they will shortly begin another off-season searching for answers, despite having a squad – at least on paper – that should be featuring in the finals.

VERDICT:

The Jets have been the better team this season, but they have a terrible away record, winning just one of their last 11 matches on the road.

Western Sydney have drawn four of their last five matches, while the last three meetings between the teams at CommBank have resulted in a draw, so we’re backing another share of the spoils on Wednesday night.

Both teams have also scored in the last four meetings at CommBank and in the Wanderers last four and Jets last two outings, so back both teams to find the back of the net (Best BTTS: YES odds $1.66 with bet365.)
