Sydney FC vs Melbourne Victory Preview & Prediction
It’s shaping as one of the matches of Round 1 as Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory resume their heated rivalry at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.
Sydney have enjoyed the wood over Victory in recent times, winning 10 of the last 13 meetings between the teams, including the last two during the 2022/23 season.
It was a disappointing season for both heavyweight clubs – Sydney finished fifth and bowed out meekly 4-0 to City in the finals, while Victory finished in second-last spot on the ladder, managing just eight wins.
Victory haven’t really made a big splash in terms of recruitment during the off-season and will be hoping former Socceroos winger Daniel Arzani can rediscover the sort of form that took him to the 2018 World Cup and on the books of Manchester City.
Meanwhile, Sydney are coming off a successful preseason, lifting the Australia Cup trophy a fortnight ago with a 3-1 win over Brisbane in the final.
Brazilian signing Fabio Gomes immediately announced himself to the home fans, scoring a second-half brace to fire Sydney to the Cup.
With Robert Mak and Joe Lolley supporting on the flanks, Sydney look to have a potent attack forming, but a lot will depend on the consistency of Gomes after Adam Le Fondre’s departure.
VERDICT:
Not much expected of Victory this season after their poor campaign last term and minimal high-profiled signings. They desperately need Arzani and an aging Bruno Fornaroli to lift.
Sydney have won eight of their last 10 games in all competitions, are confident following the Australia Cup and should have the edge at home over a team they’ve beaten in 10 of the last 13 encounters (Best Sydney FC win H2H odds $2.00 with bet365.)
