Sydney FC vs Wellington Phoenix Preview & Prediction

Reigning A-League champions Sydney FC will search for back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they come up against Wellington on Monday night.

It hasn’t been a convincing start to the season for the Sky Blues – they’ve won two of their four games, drawn the derby against the Wanderers and lost 2-0 to the Mariners.

One of Sydney’s wins came against Wellington back on January 2, but even that victory was somewhat fortuitous, with spectacular long-range goals from Calem Nieuwenhof and Luke Brattan handing them a 2-1 win, while Phoenix were also unlucky to have a late goal disallowed for offside.

Sydney are missing Adam Le Fondre up front, with Brazilian star Bobo still not match-fit after arriving last month.

In saying that, Sydney do come into this showdown with winning momentum after downing new boys Macarthur FC 3-0 last week, with rookie Patrick Wood grabbing a race and veteran Milos Ninkovic also getting on the scoresheet.

Meanwhile, Wellington are languishing in 10th spot on the ladder with just one win from their four games – although that did come in their last outing when they shocked the Mariners 2-1 in Gosford.

Captain Ulises Davila opened the scoring before pacy forward Josh Sotirio bagged the winner with just two minutes remaining.

It was a confidence-boosting win for Phoenix, who had lost two of their three matches heading into that game, including a 2-1 defeat to last-placed Newcastle Jets.

However, this fixture against Sydney has always been a tough one for Wellington, and although they were solid when the two teams met in January, they still came away empty-handed.

Wellington have scored in all of their games this season, so they can certainly get on the scoresheet, but after easily accounting for Macarthur, Sydney are deserved favourites to take all three points again.
