Sydney FC vs Western Sydney Wanderers Preview & Prediction
Sydney FC will be out to register their first win over cross-town rivals the Wanderers since 2018 when the two teams square off in what is sure to be another fiery A-League derby on Sunday at the SCG.
There was a time when Sydney FC dominated the derby, but that’s changed over the last few years, with the Wanderers winning three of the last five and the other two resulting in a draw.
This clash has been cagey in recent times, with five of the last six seeing under 2.5 goals – although their last meeting on May 1 saw the Wanderers prevail 3-2.
Western Sydney went on to demolish Western United 5-0 at home after that triumph, but they came crashing back down to earth last week, suffering a crushing 5-1 defeat away to a resurgent Perth Glory.
That defeat saw the Wanderers drop out of the top six and they come into this clash in seventh as a result, equal on points with Brisbane in sixth.
Meanwhile, reigning premiers Sydney have won their last two matches and have positioned themselves strongly to finish in the top two.
It hasn’t been their most dominant season compared to recent campaigns, but with Adam Le Fondre and Bobo starting to gel, the Sky Blues will no doubt be a force come the finals.
Sydney are also doing a great job of defending a lead, with their last five wins all coming to nil – including 1-0 and 2-0 wins over Western United and Melbourne Victory in the last week.
The Wanderers have gotten the better of Sydney recently, but we think that’s about to change come Sunday. The Sky Blues are peaking when it matters most (they’ve only lost two of their last 15), while the Wanderers remain erratic and inconsistent.
If Sydney can grab an early lead, they will be tough to overcome.
