Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne City Preview & Prediction

Phoenix will be aiming to make it three wins from three at home for the season when they welcome City to Sky Stadium on Saturday.

It’s been a great start to the season for Wellington – they’ve defeated Perth 2-1 and Brisbane 5-2 in their home games, along with picking up a point in 0-0 and 1-1 draws with the Wanderers and Victory on the road.

Oskar Zawada is second on the goalscoring chart after scoring four goals in as many games, one ahead of City striker Jamie Maclaren.

Having beaten City in four of their last seven home meetings and going unbeaten in nine of their last 11 home games dating back to last season, Wellington will be confident of claiming a positive result here.

Meanwhile, City are struggling to open the campaign after suffering a crushing 6-1 defeat in the Grand Final to the Mariners last season.

City have won just one of their four A-League games and also suffered an embarrassing home loss to mid-table Thai side Burium a few weeks ago.

Only two late goals in stoppage time saved City from another defeat just before the break, scraping a 3-3 draw at home with Macarthur.

VERDICT:

Normally City would be good odds at even money to prevail, but I can’t justify backing them on current form.

Wellington are very tough to beat at home and have started the season in strong fashion, winning their two home games. They can at the very least avoid defeat here if they maintain their current level (Best Phoenix double chance odds $1.72 with bet365.)
