Western Sydney Wanderers vs Wellington Phoenix Preview & Prediction
After making the finals last season, both the Wanderers and Phoenix will harbour similar ambitions in 23/24 as they prepare to square off in their first game of the campaign at CommBank Stadium on Sunday.
Western Sydney were knocked out of the finals by rivals Sydney FC and will now need to deal with a huge turnover of players heading into this season.
Indeed, the Wanderers have lost several key figures, including Kusini Yengi, Morgan Schneiderlin, Adama Traore, Calem Nieuwenhof and Romain Amalfitano.
Milos Ninkovic has re-signed for another season in the A-League, while the Wanderers also made a big splash in the transfer market with the signing of former PSV midfielder Jorrit Hendrix, who played 238 games for the Dutch giants and featured in some huge Champions League matches against the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Phoenix were also knocked out of the finals last season at the first time of asking, barely threatening in a 2-0 defeat to Adelaide.
Wellington haven’t really added any star power to their squad ahead of this season, with fringe former Newcastle Jets pair Mohamed Al-Taay and Jack Duncan crossing the ditch.
Away form was an issue for Wellington towards the end of last season, with the Kiwi club winning just two of their last nine road outings.
However, scoring goals wasn’t an issue at all for Phoenix – they incredibly managed to find the back of the net in 25 of their 27 games for the season and will be hoping that attacking form continues into this term.
VERDICT:
Both teams have lost some big names this season, but have to back the Wanderers at home after they thumped Phoenix 4-0 at CommBank earlier this year.
Wellington were poor on the road last term and tough to see anything changing early on here (Best Wanderers H2H win odds $1.75 with bet365.)
