Wellington Phoenix vs Western Sydney Wanderers Preview & Prediction
It’s first up against third on Saturday in Wellington as the Phoenix come up against the Wanderers in A-League Round 9 action.
Both teams have put together excellent starts to the season, suffering just one defeat after the first eight rounds.
Phoenix are the only team to have won five games and as a result, are flying high at the top of the table. The Kiwi club have the best defence in the league too, conceding just seven goals.
Wellington are coming off a brilliant 3-0 road win over Macarthur in their last outing, leapfrogging them on the ladder as a result.
Meanwhile, the Wanderers snapped a two-game winless run last week with a narrow 1-0 home victory over Adelaide.
The Wanderers have been solid without being spectacular this season and really need to fix their road form – they haven’t won outside of Sydney in over a year, while they also haven’t prevailed in Wellington since 2018.
VERDICT:
Wellington are the real deal this season and have proved very tough to break down, leaking only seven goals – and three were against the Jets in what is looking like an outlier.
The Wanderers haven’t won in New Zealand since 2018 and haven’t taken three points outside of Sydney since October 2022. Phoenix should have the edge in what could be a low-scoring game between the league’s best two defences (Best Phoenix win H2H odds $2.50 with bet365.)
