Sydney FC vs Melbourne City Preview & Prediction
An all top-six battle awaits on Saturday night as Adelaide and the Wanderers collide for the second time this season.
Both sides are enjoying a solid season and will be expecting to feature in the finals after locking down a spot in the top six after 14 (Adelaide) and 16 (Wanderers) games.
With just three points separating second and sixth, a win here would be enormous for both sides – especially Adelaide, who have played two less games than league leaders Central Coast.
Speaking of, Adelaide saw their six-match winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Mariners in their last outing. The Reds went up 1-0 after sensationally saving two penalties, but Central Coast showed why they’re worthy leaders and scored twice in quick succession to prevail 2-1.
Regardless, Adelaide shouldn’t be deterred by one loss to the table-toppers and will hope to bounce back immediately on their home turf on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, the Wanderers have gone winless in their last three games, suffering a 4-1 pummelling at the hands of Melbourne City before back-to-back draws against Brisbane and Central Coast.
Carl Robinson has transformed the Wanderers into a steely side at home, but they haven’t fared so well on the road, winning just one of their last five away games.
That swings the pendulum in Adelaide’s favour for me. There’s been plenty of goals when these two teams have played in recent times, with the last seven seeing over 2.5 goals and six seeing over 3.5.
Adelaide have only kept one clean sheet in their last seven games, so the Wanderers can get on the scoresheet, but I’m backing the Reds to have more firepower at home.
