Western Sydney Wanderers vs Melbourne City Preview & Prediction

Reigning premiers Melbourne City will be keen to start building some momentum as they prepare to face Western Sydney Wanderers at CommBank Stadium on Friday night.

City have struggled to produce their best football for the majority of this campaign after claiming their first premiership last season, but they are coming into this showdown in impressive touch.

In what was arguably their best performance of the season, City registered a dominant 4-2 away win over the Newcastle Jets, with Jamie Maclaren grabbing a brace and Matthew Leckie also getting on the scoresheet.

That win lifted City up to second on the ladder and they’ve got a fantastic chance to post back-to-back wins for the first time this season on Friday night.

The Wanderers have had a nightmare start to their season, winning just two of their nine games, which saw Carl Robinson given his marching orders.

Western Sydney were desperate to end their finals drought and spent big in an attempt to lure some marquee signings to the club over the off-season, but they are already five points adrift of the top six having played one more game than Macarthur in sixth.

Mark Rudan’s tenure as coach got off to a winning start in a 1-0 home triumph over Perth, but the Wanderers offered little in a last-start 1-0 defeat to Western United, who hadn’t won a game outside of Victoria since April before that game.

VERDICT:

The Wanderers have a great team on paper, but they are disjointed and Rudan will need more time in order to get them to gel.

Meanwhile, City played their best game of the season on Tuesday in crushing the Jets, with Socceroos stars Maclaren and Leckie getting on the scoresheet.

If City can reproduce that level, they should win this (Best City win odds $1.92 with TAB.)
