Horse racing is the backbone of Australian betting, with meetings almost every day of the year and the biggest carnivals of the year running through spring. This guide explains how to bet on horse racing in Australia: every main bet type, how place betting works, how to read a form guide, and the races worth knowing.
Horse Racing Bet Types
Win: Back a horse to finish first. It is the simplest racing bet and the one most punters start with.
Place: Back a horse to finish in the placings, usually first, second or third. It pays less than a win bet because it is more likely to land.
Each way: Two bets of equal stake on the same horse, one to win and one to place. A $10 each way bet costs $20. If the horse wins, both bets pay; if it only places, you collect the place half. See our each way betting guide.
Fixed odds: Your price is locked in when you bet, so you know exactly what you will be paid. Most online bets in Australia are fixed odds.
Tote: Your dividend comes from a pool of every bet on the race and is only final once the race is run. Some bookmakers pay the better of the tote and fixed price on selected races. Read more in our tote betting guide.
Starting price (SP): Your bet is settled at the horse’s official price when the race starts, rather than the price when you placed it.
Exotic Bets: Quinella, Trifecta, First Four and Quaddie
Exotic bets ask you to pick more than one horse, either in the same race or across several races. They are harder to land but pay far more.
Quinella: Pick the first two horses in either order. See our quinella guide.
Exacta: Pick the first two horses in the exact order. See our exacta guide.
Trifecta: Pick the first three horses in the exact order. A boxed trifecta covers your selections finishing in any order, for a higher total stake. See our trifecta guide.
First Four: Pick the first four horses in order, or box them to cover any order. See our First 4 guide and calculator.
Quaddie: Pick the winners of four nominated races at the same meeting. It is the most popular multi-race exotic in Australia, and the early quaddie covers four earlier races. See our quaddie guide.
Doubles: A running double picks the winners of two consecutive races, and a daily double picks the winners of two nominated races on the card.
Mystery bets: The bookmaker picks the runners for you. See our mystery bet guide.
Multis and Same Race Multis
A racing multi combines winners from different races into one bet, and every leg has to win. A same race multi combines several outcomes from one race, such as a horse to win and another to place. Some bookmakers also offer full-cover bets that combine every double, treble and multi from a set of selections, so you can collect even if only some of them win.
How Place Betting Works
The number of places paid depends on how many horses run:
| Runners | Places paid |
|---|---|
| 8 or more | 1st, 2nd and 3rd |
| 5 to 7 | 1st and 2nd |
| 4 or fewer | Usually no place betting |
If a horse is scratched after you take a fixed price, the field shrinks and bookmakers usually apply a deduction to winning fixed odds bets. Bets on a scratched horse are refunded.
How to Read a Form Guide
Form figures: A horse’s recent finishing positions, most recent on the right. A 0 means it finished tenth or worse, and an x marks a spell between campaigns.
Barrier: The starting gate. An inside barrier usually helps, especially over shorter distances and at tight tracks.
Weight: The weight the horse carries, including the jockey. In handicaps, better horses carry more weight to even up the field.
Jockey and trainer: Look for in-form combinations and trainers with a good record at the track or in that type of race.
Track condition: Australian tracks are rated from 1 to 10. Some horses prefer a firm surface and others handle the wet.
| Rating | Track condition |
|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Firm |
| 3 to 4 | Good |
| 5 to 7 | Soft |
| 8 to 10 | Heavy |
Class: Group 1 is the highest grade, followed by Group 2, Group 3 and Listed races. A horse dropping in class is often worth a second look.
How to Place a Horse Racing Bet
Step 1: Choose a licensed Australian bookmaker. We recommend Picklebet, Dabble, Neds, Ladbrokes or bet365.
Step 2: Register and verify your identity. You must be 18 or over.
Step 3: Deposit funds and set a deposit limit.
Step 4: Open the racing section, choose the meeting and race, then pick your horse and bet type.
Step 5: Add the selection to your bet slip, enter your stake and confirm before the race jumps. Betting closes when the race starts.

Horse Racing Betting Tips for Beginners
Start simple: Win and place bets teach you how races are run before you spend money on exotics.
Check the track rating: A wet track changes the race. Check each horse’s record on that rating as well as its last start.
Watch the market: A horse that firms in the betting is attracting money. A horse that drifts may be worth avoiding, or may be a value bet if the form still stacks up.
Shop for the best price: Fixed odds differ between bookmakers, especially early, so compare before you bet.
Set a budget: Decide what you can afford to lose each week, stick to it and never chase losses.

Horse Racing Betting Guide FAQs
How do you bet on horse racing?
Open an account with a licensed Australian bookmaker, choose a race, pick your horse and choose a bet type: win, place or each way are the simplest. Add the selection to your bet slip, enter your stake and confirm before the race jumps.
What is the best horse racing bet for beginners?
Start with win, place or each way bets. A place bet pays if your horse finishes in the placings, which is usually the top three, so it is the safest way to learn. Move on to exotics such as the quinella and trifecta once you are comfortable reading the form.
How does an each way bet work in horse racing?
An each way bet is two bets of equal stake: one for the horse to win and one for it to place. A $10 each way bet costs $20. If the horse wins, both bets pay. If it only places, the place half pays and the win half loses.
How many places are paid in horse racing?
In Australia, races with eight or more runners usually pay three places, races with five to seven runners pay two places, and races with four or fewer runners usually have no place betting.
What is the difference between fixed odds and tote betting?
Fixed odds lock in your price when you place the bet. Tote dividends come from a pool of all bets on the race and are only final once the race is run, so the payout can move after you bet.
What happens if my horse is scratched?
If your horse is scratched, your bet on it is refunded. If another horse is scratched after you take a fixed price, bookmakers usually apply a deduction to winning fixed odds bets to reflect the smaller field.
