Broncos Shock Storm With Late Comeback To Win Grand Final
The Brisbane Broncos have etched their name in NRL history by securing their seventh premiership with an epic 26-22 victory over the Melbourne Storm in the 2025 Grand Final.
This victory marks their first premiership since 2006, and it couldn’t have come at a better time, with Reece Walsh producing one of the finest individual performances in recent memory. After trailing 22-12, the Broncos mounted a spectacular comeback, avenging their heartbreaking loss to Penrith two years ago.
In front of 80,223 fans at Accor Stadium, Ben Hunt, who had endured the agony of missing out on a premiership with the Broncos in 2015, finally got his redemption, while Adam Reynolds added a second premiership ring to his collection, 11 years after his first with South Sydney.
With the win, Broncos’ coach Michael Maguire joined the ranks of Wayne Bennett and Phil Gould as one of the select few to have won NRL titles with two different clubs.
The Broncos’ backs stood tall on the grand stage, with Gehamat Shibasaki and Deine Mariner both delivering impressive performances. Shibasaki racked up 201 run metres and 9 tackle breaks, while Mariner earned 219 metres and 7 tackle breaks, each crossing for a double.
Their efforts were key in putting the Storm under pressure in the second half. On the losing side, Ryan Papenhuyzen stood out for the Storm with 239 run metres, 2 tackle breaks, a try assist, and 2 line-break assists, while winger Will Warbrick added 187 run metres and 6 tackle breaks.
But the hero of the match was Reece Walsh, who ran for 176 metres, broke 14 tackles, provided 3 try assists, and saved three more in a performance that left fans and teammates in awe. Walsh’s performance was critical in the Broncos’ third comeback win in this finals series.
The match was anything but dull, with a game-saving try-saver by Walsh on Ryan Papenhuyzen in the 80th minute when the Storm fullback looked set to race away after receiving a pass from Eli Katoa.

The Broncos also weathered a sin-bin for Trent Loiero in the 78th minute for a high shot on Brendan Piakura, but despite the numerical disadvantage, the Broncos held firm. The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, with the Storm dominating early. They scored 4 tries to the Broncos’ 2 in the first half, leading 22-12 at the break.
Notable moments from the first half included a stunning solo try from Walsh in the 31st minute, where he tore through four Storm defenders to score. Storm halfback Jahrome Hughes responded just 4 minutes later with a dazzling solo effort of his own, which was his 70th career try.
The second half saw the Broncos claw their way back, with Mariner crossing for a double and Shibasaki adding another try, putting the Broncos ahead 26-22. The Broncos’ defence held strong, especially with Walsh and Ezra Mam stepping up to ensure the Storm couldn’t break through in the dying minutes.
The final moments saw plenty of action, with both teams pushing hard for the win, but it was Brisbane’s resilience and Walsh’s magic that ultimately saw them over the line.
The Storm, while disappointed, can hold their heads high. Despite the loss, they fought valiantly and made the Broncos earn every point. Craig Bellamy broke his own record for most grand final appearances as a coach with this match, though the result didn’t go his way.
The 2025 Grand Final was a fitting end to what has been one of the most exciting NRL seasons in recent memory. With Walsh’s heroics, Reynolds’ redemption, and a seesawing second half, it’s a game that will be remembered for years to come. The Broncos’ 26-22 victory is their seventh premiership, and they’re once again the kings of the NRL!
