Storm vs Eels
Betting Tip: Storm to win
The Eels showed some serious improvement at the back end of last season under new coach Ryles. However, they’re unlikely to topple Melbourne at home. The Storm only lost 3 times last season at AAMI Park, and Parramatta will lack the scoring firepower with Josh Addo-Carr out with a broken thumb.
Warriors vs Roosters
Betting Tip: Warriors to win
If you’re looking for an underdog to back in Round 1, then the Warriors are a solid shout. The Roosters were very shaky on the road last season and relied on scoring tries in bunches to compensate for their leaky defence.
Don’t be surprised if they aren’t ready for a physical Warriors’ side who always start the season strong and know how to grind out wins in Auckland. Also, even though everyone is making a big deal out of the Roosters’ signing Cherry-Evans, at 37 it’s far from a sure thing that he can deliver the goods this season.
Broncos vs Panthers
Betting Tip: Broncos to win
In a rematch of last year’s preliminary final, the Panthers are heading to Suncorp to take on the reigning premiers in what is set to be a barnbuster.
The Broncos may be the favourites, but this game could go either way. Reece Walsh and Nathan Cleary both have the ability to take over a match, and this one could well come down to whoever can put their mark on the game.
The Panthers will have to complete well over 80% of their sets of sixes if they’re going to tame the Broncos’ attack, which led the league last year.
Sharks vs Titans
Betting Tip: Sharks to win
Gold Coast need a minor miracle to win this one. Cronulla was nothing short of amazing at home last year, winning 10 games and losing just 2. The only team in the whole comp with a better home record was the Raiders.
To make matters worse for the poor Titans whose porous defence last year conceded on average just under 30 points per match, they’re facing a Sharks team that was top 5 in terms of scoring last season and features Ronaldo Mulitalo, who, in our opinion, is the 3rd best winger in the comp. This match shouldn’t be close and could well be over before the halftime break!
Sea Eagles vs Raiders
Betting Tip: Raiders to win
Even the bookies don’t know who will win this one. Manly are usually tough to beat at home, but they’re missing Cherry-Evans, who has jumped ship to the Roosters. Also, the Raiders are no slouches. The reining Minor Premiers didn’t rack up a 148-point difference last year by accident.
We’re backing the Green Machine to ultimately do the business. Manly were far from invincible at Brookie last year, losing 4 games, but even more worrying, they only averaged 23 points per game, that won’t be enough to outlast Canberra.
Dolphins vs Rabbitohs
Betting Tip: Rabbitohs to win
The Dolphins may have home-ground advantage up at Suncorp, but that didn’t count for much last year, as they barely compiled a winning record. We’re betting on some Wayne Bennett magic. The legendary coach must have cooked up some special sauce for the Rabbitohs this season, and we are expecting big things from new signing David Fifita.
