Knights Too Strong for Cowboys in Vegas
Newcastle Knights 28-18 North Queensland Cowboys
Both the Knights and Cowboys turned up in Vegas ready to play, and after a very hard-fought first half, the two sides went into the sheds all square at 12-12.
The Cowboys went to sleep early in the second, and before you knew it, Bradman Best and Dominic Young crossed the line for the Cowboys. North Queensland mounted a comeback thanks to a try from Murray Taulagi, but it was all in vain after Braidon Burns got sin-binned in the 71st minute.
Dragons Choke Against Doggies
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 15-14 St. George Illawarra Dragons
In a bruising and at times scrappy game, the Bulldogs were forced to go past the full 80 minutes to get the win against the Dragons in the States. It looked like the Doggies might eke out a win until Kyle Flannagan kicked a late penalty goal to force extra time.
The Dragons let the game slip through their fingers as Valentine Holmes missed three field goal attempts and Daniel Atkinson missed another. It wasn’t until the 89th minute that Doggies captain Stephen Crichton finally slotted the ball through the posts.
Storm Embarrass Eel at AAMI Park
Melbourne Storm 52-4 Parramatta Eels
We weren’t expecting a close match, but good lord, this looked like a training run as the Storm put a half-century on the poor Eels. Melbourne almost had 60% of the ball, and when Parramatta did finally get their hands on the pill, they only completed 63% of their sets!
Warriors Upset Roosters in Auckland
New Zealand Warriors 42-18 Sydney Roosters
The Roosters looked shell-shocked in the first half as the Warriors scored four tries and went into the break with a commanding 22-6 lead. Things only got worse for the Bondi boys when Leka Halasima scored in the 46th minute, essentially ending the game. The Roosters just couldn’t hang onto the ball, giving away 11 penalties and making 13 errors.
Panthers Shock Broncos at Suncorp
Brisbane Broncos 0-26 Penrith Panthers
In the most shocking result of the round, the Panthers kept the reigning Premiers scoreless in front of their gobsmacked home fans. Neither side was at its best, but the Broncos had a shocker, missing 37 tackles and completing just 61% of their sets of sixes. If they play like that week in and week out, you can forget about a Premiership defence.
Sharks Devour Titans in Cronulla
Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks 50-10 Gold Coast Titans
We’ll forgive you if you turned this one off before halftime because the Titans looked like third-grade players out there against a red-hot Sharks side. Braydon Trindall was on fire, racking up two try assists thanks to a beautiful bomb and grubber before bagging two tries himself. At halftime, the Sharks were up 34-0.
Fair play to the Titans, who hung around in the second half, but the Sharks were not to be denied as they added another two tries, bringing the final score to 50-10.
Raiders Dig Deep Against Sea Eagles
Manly Warringah Sea Eagles 28-29 Canberra Raiders
This was by far the match of the round, as Manly and Canberra swapped the lead back and forth throughout the match. It looked like the Raiders would cruise home to victory after they were up by 14 points with seven minutes to go.
However, the Sea Eagles had other plans, as Toluta’u Koula and Jamal Fogarty scored back-to-back tries, and Fogarty hit a last-minute penalty against his former club to force extra time. However, after marching down the field, the Raiders’ halfback Ethan Sanders lined up 40 m out, right in front of the sticks, and drilled home the game-winning field goal.
Bunnies Power Past Dolphins at Suncorp
The Dolphins 30-40 South Sydney Rabbitohs
Wayne Bennett, the former king of Suncorp, came up with the goods against his former club. The legendary coach guided the Bunnies to an impressive first-half performance as they ran in five tries, including a double from Campbell Graham. Despite being outscored in the second half, the Rabbitohs held on for a 40-30 win.
