Here are the latest happenings in the NRL Telstra Premiership at the end of round 1.
Raiders Punish Warriors in Vegas
Canberra Raiders 30-8 New Zealand Warriors
In front of over 45,000 fans, the Raiders ran all over the poor Warriors, who looked a little jet-lagged out there. Despite both teams struggling to complete their sets, the Warriors missed a whopping 44 tackles.
With such sloppy defence, it’s a miracle the Raiders only won 30-8. Sebastian Kris and Xavier Savage bagged a double each, and Jamal Fogarty was fantastic with the boot, kicking 4/5 conversions.
Panthers Edge Past Sharks
Penrith Panthers 28-22 Cronulla Sharks
Cronulla got off to an electric start when Nick Hynes held up the line and delivered the perfect ball to Jesse Ramien, who crashed over the line in the 3rd minute.
The teams were incredibly even, splitting possession fifty-fifty and both completing 78% of their sets. Penrith’s defence looked a little shaky, missing 35 tackles. It wasn’t until the 75th minute, when Daine Laurie ran around some tired Cronulla defenders, that the Panthers finally secured the victory.
Roosters Embarrassed By Broncos
Sydney Roosters 14-50 Brisbane Broncos
The Broncos came out on fire after Payne Haas smashed Lindsay Collins on the opening hit-up, driving him back 10 m and forcing him to drop the ball. However, it was Dom Young who scored the opener in the 6th minute after some aggressive defence from the Broncos went wrong.
Just a few minutes later, Ben Hunt went down the short side and linked up with Jesse Arthars, who sprinted down the touchline before passing inside to Gehamat Shibasaki for the try. After that, the floodgates were well and truly opened as Brisbane scored 6 unanswered tries.
Knights Squeeze Past Tigers
Wests Tigers 8-10 Newcastle Knights
The Tigers got off to an 8-0 lead after a try by Jeral Skelton in the 6th minute and then a penalty from Adam Doueihi in the 28th minute. However, it was a game of two halves as the Knights scored two tries in the 51st and 66th minutes to seal the win.
Rabbitohs Grind Down Dolphins
South Sydney Rabbitohs 16-14 The Dolphins
In the 20th minute, Max Plath ended up with the ball and, thanks to a creative offload, found Sean O’Sullivan. Eventually, Jamayne Isaako crossed the line.
Munro scored 4 minutes later, and Bunnies went into the sheds with a 12-4 lead. However, after tries from Isaako and Plath and a conversion, the Dolphins were leading 14-12 with 16 minutes to go. South Sydney spun the ball wide, and thanks to some silky passing skills from Gray and Jack Wighton, Isaiah Tass scored the game-winner in the 67th minute.
Bulldogs Chomp on Dragons
St George Dragons 20-28 Canterbury Bulldogs
Christian Tuipulotu was on fire at Jubilee Stadium, scoring three tries. However, it wasn’t enough to keep the Doggies at bay. Matt Burton was excellent, kicking four conversions, and Sitili Tupouniua bagged back-to-back tries.
Sea Eagles Pummel Cowboys
Manly Sea Eagles 42-12 North Queensland Cowboys
The Cowboys looked shell-shocked at Brookvale as they scored seven unanswered tries. The game was over by half-time. At the very end, the Cowboys scored a few tries to avoid going home with zero points.
Storm Electrocute Eels
Melbourne Storm 56-18 Parramatta Eels
Parramatta fans are on high alert after the Storm made them look like a reserve-grade side. The Storm scored a try every couple of minutes, brushing the Eels aside with ease.
