Here are the latest happenings in the NRL Telstra Premiership at the end of round 12.
Dolphins Stun Bulldogs
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 8-44 The Dolphins
The Bulldogs, who are at the top of the table, were expected to cruise past the Dolphins, who’ve been struggling this season. However, the Queensland side had other ideas. Despite a close first half, the Doggies completely imploded in the second half as the Dolphins scored 5 unanswered tries and Jamayne Isaako couldn’t miss a conversion even if he tried.
The Bulldogs really struggled in the wet and slippery conditions in Sydney. Amazingly, it didn’t seem to affect the Dolphins, who were spinning the ball wide and offloading. With 10 minutes to go, Canterbury gave up as the Dolphins racked up 3 soft tries after the result had already been decided.
Eels Dominate Sea Eagles
Parramatta Eels 30-10 Manly Warringah Sea Eagles
In another big upset, the Eels outclassed the Sea Eagles at CommBank Stadium. Despite Lehi Hopoate scoring a double and Manly completing 87% of their sets, the Eels were clinical when they got inside the Sea Eagles’ half and scored 5 tries, including a lovely backline move, which saw Isaiah Iongi throw a perfect dummy, palm a defender, and skip over the tryline.
Knights Embarrass Panthers in Bathurst
Penrith Panthers 6-25 Newcastle Knights
The Panthers had an absolute shocker in Bathurst. The game was essentially over by the end of the first half after the Panthers conceded 24 points. Penrith’s defence was hopeless as the Knights pierced their line 9 times and missed 50 tackles. The Panthers spent most of the game defending as Newcastle forced them to make 436 tackles.
This is an extremely worrying performance for the Panthers, who look very unlikely to make the top 8, despite being touted as title contenders at the beginning of the season. The Knights, who’ve struggled to score points all year, had no problems carving Penrith up.
Roosters Too Strong for Sharks
Sydney Roosters 42-16 Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks
The Roosters wound back the clock and put on a vintage performance for the fans in Gosford. Despite only completing 75% of their stats and equalling the Sharks in time in possession, the Chooks managed to score 7 tries. The Sharks looked shell-shocked as, within 10 minutes, Daniel Tupou had already bagged 2 tries.
Even though the Sharkies went into the sheds down 6-20, they tried to mount a comeback with tries from KL Iro and Ronaldo Mulitalo. However, by that stage, the game was essentially over. The Sharks failed to defuse a bomb from Sandon Smith, which was picked up by Victor Radley, who offloaded to Xavier Va’a, who scored the Roosters’ 5th try.
Raiders Sneak Past Warriors in Auckland
New Zealand Warriors 10-16 Canberra Raiders
The Warriors were feeling confident coming into this clash after winning 5 games in a row. However, in a back-and-forth, low-scoring match which saw 3 players sent off, the Warriors failed to get the job done.
After Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad was sin-binned in the 58th minute for slowing down the play, the Raiders kicked a penalty to tie the game. Then, a few minutes later, Ata Mariota ran a great line, bursting through the Warriors’ line and offloading to a sprinting Jamal Fogarty, who ran 40m to score in the corner and win the game for Canberra.
