Here are the latest happenings in the NRL Telstra Premiership at the end of round 14.
Knights Stun Sea Eagles
Newcastle Knights 26-22 Manly Warringah Sea Eagles
The Knights, who’ve struggled to score points all season, managed to put 5 tries on the Sea Eagles. It was a game of two halves, as Manly got off to a dream start, racking up 3 tries and going into the break up 16-0. However, Newcastle mounted an epic comeback in front of the local fans, scoring 26 points in the second half.
Storm Thump Cowboys
Melbourne Storm 38-14 North Queensland Cowboys
The Storm were in cruise control against the Cowboys, Jahrome Hughes scored a double in the first half, and Ryan Papenhuyzen couldn’t miss a conversion if he tried.
Despite the Cowboys struggling to get the ball and complete their sets, they managed to get within biting distance after 2 early second-half tries from Scott Drinkwater and Robert Derby. However, Melbourne then went to another gear, crossing the line another 2 times.
Dolphins Thrash Dragons
The Dolphins 56-6 St. George Illawarra Dragons
We didn’t see that scoreline coming! The Dragons barely saw the ball and couldn’t get anywhere near the Dolphins’ try line. The game was essentially over at halftime as the Dolphins went into the sheds up 28-2. However, instead of taking it easy, the Queensland side scored 5 tries.
Warriors Dominate Sharks
Cronulla Sutherland Sharks 10-40 New Zealand Warriors
The Warriors continue their excellent form with a very impressive performance against the Sharks in Sydney. The Sharks blinked and were down 2 tries but managed to fight their way back to be down only 2 points at halftime. The Warriors dominated the second half, scoring 5 unanswered tries and completing over 90% of their sets of sixes.
Broncos Teach Titans a Lesson
Brisbane Broncos 44-14 Gold Coast Titans
The Broncos finally get back into the win column with a punishing display of attack. Reece Walsh, Gehamat Shibasaki, and Josiah Karapani all got doubles as they ran around the Titans’ lacklustre defence with ease.
Raiders Too Strong For Rabbitohs
Canberra Raiders 36-12 South Sydney Rabbitohs
The Bunnies were always going to struggle down in Canberra. In the first 15 minutes the Rabbitohs were on fire, racking up 2 tries, a penalty, and a conversion. After a pep talk from Ricky Stuart, the Raiders overwhelmed South Sydney in the second half, scoring 5 unanswered tries.
Panthers Just Outlast Tigers
Wests Tigers 14-18 Penrith Panthers
Despite getting absolutely smashed in two bone-rattling tackles, Nathan Cleary ended up getting the better of Jarome Luai at CommBank Stadium. The Tigers got off to a strong start with 2 tries thanks to the soft penalties conceded by the Panthers, but just before halftime, Thomas Jenkins scored to level the game.
The Panthers looked to be in control after another try from Jenkins and a penalty from Cleary, but then Jeral Skelton scored with 11 minutes to go. The Panthers were forced into desperate defence due to some tricky bombs from Luai, but ultimately their line held.
Bulldogs Chow Down on Eels
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 30-12 Parramatta Eels
An upset was on the cards for the Eels after they were neck and neck with the Doggies at the halftime break. Unfortunately, for Parramatta fans, the Bulldogs were on fire in the second half, controlling over 60% of the ball and scoring 3 tries. Lachie Galvin on debut also got his first try for Canterbury.
