Here are the latest happenings in the NRL Telstra Premiership Round 2.
Knights Slay Dolphins in Newcastle
Newcastle Knights 26-12 The Dolphins
Newcastle fans had reason to celebrate on Thursday night as James Schiller scored two tries by the 13th minute. Bradman Best and Dane Gagai added their names to the try list with more than 10 minutes left in the first half. The Dolphins tried to mount a comeback, but it was too little, too late!
Warriors Too Good for Eagles in New Zealand
New Zealand Warriors 36-16 Sea Eagles
We know the Warriors are unpredictable, but we didn’t expect this scoreline. Manly got off to the perfect start after Jason Saab skipped down the sideline and found Tom Trbojevic on his inside. However, the Warriors then scored three unanswered tries. Luke Metcalf’s perfect kicking performance kept the Warriors comfortably ahead, and two late tries created an unflattering scoreline for Manly.
Roosters Win a Shootout Against Panthers in Sydney
Panthers 38-32 Sydney Roosters
The Roosters snapped a 10-game losing streak against the Panthers in a massive upset. Penrith got off to a great start after Paul Alamoti ran around some out-of-position Roosters’ defenders, but a few minutes later, Mark Nawaqanitawase threw a beautiful dummy and flew through a gap to score. The game turned into a try fest, but the Panthers made too many mistakes, and ultimately, the Roosters took the win.
Rabbitohs Escape Dragons Clutches in Wollongong
St. George Illawarra Dragons 24-25 South Sydney Rabbitohs
Wayne Bennett is working his magic on the Bunnies and has guided them to another close win. Sean Keppies’ 70th-minute try equalised the score, but then a field goal from Jamie Humphreys delivered the Rabbits the win.
Sharks Take a Bite Out of the Cowboys
North Queensland Cowboys 12-36 Cronulla Sharks
The Cowboys missed tackle after tackle as the Sharks’ backline speed and powerful ball running proved too much for North Queensland. Nicho Hynes played great, drawing in defenders and delivering the perfect pass. Kayal Iro got a double as he showed his incredible strength. The Sharks look like title contenders.
Raiders Stun Broncos in Canberra
Canberra Raiders 32-22 Brisbane Broncos
The Raiders made the long trip back from Vegas and put on a show for the Canberra fans. With two quick tries from Matty Nicholson and Josh Papalii, the Raiders were in the driver’s seat. A double from Jesse Arthars clawed the Broncos back into the game, but the Raiders scored four unanswered tries to put the Broncos’ finals hopes in doubt.
Tigers Chew on Eels at Parramatta
Parramatta Eels 6-32 Wests Tigers
It’s only round 2, but the Eels looked destined to win the wooden spoon this season. The Tigers put on a clinic against the Eels, scoring six tries to one. Parramatta fans will be having nightmares about this game and Sunia Turuva in particular. The Fijian scored a hat trick!
Bulldogs Chew on Titans at Belmore
Canterbury Bulldogs 40-24 Gold Coast Titans
After some quick hands, Marcelo Montoya scored in the corner after just one minute. Then, in the 10th minute, after a dummy that even fooled the cameraman, Jaeman Salmon skipped across the line. The Doggies scored another two tries before the Titans even got on the board.
Canterbury let their guard down in the second half, but the Titans never had a chance of mounting a comeback.
