NRL Telstra Premiership Round 5 Round Up, Panthers Lose Again & Eels Get Their First Win and the Dolphins shock Gold Coast Titians
Raiders Beach Sharks
Canberra Raiders 24-20 Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks
The Raiders have turned Canberra into a fortress, and not even the Sharks could bite their way through. This was an incredibly tight match. The Raiders were trailing by 2 points until some 5th tackle magic saw Sebastian Kris cross the line in the 78th minute, securing the win for the Raiders.
Cowboys Leave Panthers in Shock
Penrith Panthers 18-22 North Queensland Cowboys
Nobody was picking the Cowboys to beat the Panthers in Penrith, but the Queenslanders had other ideas, especially when Murray Taulagi scored in the 6th minute. Despite going into the shed up 6, the Panthers self-destructed in the second half, giving up 10 points.
Rabbitohs Triumphant Over Roosters
South Sydney Rabbitohs 20-14 Sydney Roosters
This game lived up to the hype as two of the NRL’s most storied clubs got stuck into each other. Latrell Mitchell was on fire, and his 4/4 kicking performance ultimately proved the difference as the Rabbitohs and Roosters scored 3 tries each.
Eels Squirm Past Dragons
Parramatta Eels 23-22 St. George Illawarra Dragons
The Eels finally secured their first win of the season, but it was anything but easy. Clinton Gutherson scored 2 tries against his own club, but Josh Addo-Carr and Zac Lomax kept Parramatta in the game. Two second-half tries and a late penalty goal from the Eels levelled the game. In a thrilling golden point extra time, Lomax drilled the field goal for the win.
Dolphins Shock Titans
Gold Coast Titans 10-36 The Dolphins
Inspired by Parramatta, the Dolphins also got their first win of the season. However, unlike the Eels, Kristian Woolf’s men cruised to victory. The Dolphins scored 4 unanswered tries. By the time Phillip Sami and AJ Brimson scored back-to-back tries, it was too late for the Titans. Jamayne Isaako was impressive with the boot, kicking 8 goals.
Broncos Charge Through Tigers
Brisbane Broncos 46-24 Wests Tigers
This game was an absolute try-fest! The Broncos went into the sheds with a slight 14-12 lead, and it looked like the Tigers could cause an upset. However, Brisbane were too good in the second half, scoring 4 tries to the Tigers’ 2, and Adam Reynolds and Reece Walsh put on a kicking clinic with 7 conversions, a penalty, and a drop goal.
Storm Rain on Manly’s Parade
Manly Sea Eagles 24-48 Melbourne Storm
With home-field advantage and a bunch of Storm players out injured, this was Manly’s game to lose. However, the local fans were left in shock as Melbourne scored 3 tries before the Sea Eagles even got on the scoreboard. The Storm effortlessly sliced through Manly’s, scoring 8 tries. The Storm are definitely the team to beat and look a level or 2 above their nearest challengers.
Bulldogs Bite Through Knight’s Armour
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 20-0 Newcastle Knights
The Doggies are at the top of the table and are the only unbeaten team in the NRL after dismantling the Knights. Newcastle could barely get the ball and were forced to make tackle after tackle. Despite a close second half where neither team scored, the Knights eventually ran out of steam in the second half, and Canterbury scored 3 tries to zip!
