Essendon vs Richmond Preview

The Bombers came from behind against the Eagles to achieve one of their biggest wins in recent history.

Essendon found themselves down by as much as five goals late in the second term against a team that had lost just only one game at home in almost two seasons.

The side featured nine players with less than 35 games, but their youthful energy has brought them into finals contention. Although many thought they’d be a bottom four side this season.

Not only are the Bombers playing good football at the moment, but they have also scored the third greatest number of points in the league. Despite being ninth, and a win on Saturday night can move them into the eight.

The surge of Essendon’s form can be heavily juxtaposed to the incredible form of their midfield, with Darcy Parish and Zach Merrett controlling things in the middle of the ground, as they did last time out against the Eagles.

Meanwhile, the Tigers survived a scare against the Crows in a five-goal triumph to return to the eight.

Although Richmond defeated Adelaide by 28 points, they weren’t convincing for the majority of the match. Jack Riewoldt helped drag them over the line in a three-goal final term, which also saw him take a mark of the year contender.

However, the Tigers have dominated the Bombers for the best part of a decade, winning the previous 10 meetings.

Despite Tom Lynch not being in the side, it was still the young talls who were the best against the Crows. Callum Coleman-Jones and Mabior Chol kicked six goals between them and could have an influence on a relatively undersized Essendon defence that could miss Jayden Laverde.

Tickets for this match are already sold out in less than a day, so a huge crowd is expected on Saturday night.

A match between two of the most entertaining teams in the competition awaits, and I believe the Bombers can cause an upset against the reigning premiers.

Bombers vs Tigers Team News

Essendon will miss Will Snelling and possibly Jayden Laverde for this clash. Aaron Francis will return, whilst Sam Draper could be included for the first time since his injury in Round 2.

The Tigers will be forced to make one change with Toby Nankervis missing with injury. However, they will see the return of Shane Edwards.

The two sides last met in Round 13 last season which saw the Tigers win by 12 points.
