Essendon vs Richmond Preview
The annual ‘Dreamtime at the G’ fixture shapes as a crucial one for both sides and it is the resurgent Richmond that head in as favourites on the back of some promising recent form.
After recording a confidence boosting 46 point win over West Coast in Round 8, the Tigers were able to knock over the reigning premiers, Geelong, by 24 points to open up Round 9, showing glimpses of the form that took them to three flags in four years from 2017-2020.
The veteran trio of Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt combined for nine goals, while Giants recruit, Tim Taranto, continued his excellent form for his new club with 28 disposals.
The Tigers sit below Essendon on the ladder, however, in 13th position, half a game behind 10th placed Essendon. The Bombers bolted out of the blocks in 2023, winning four of their first five but they have since dropped their past four.
Injuries have begun to take a bit of a toll on the red and black, particularly down back. They have been unable to contain power forwards in recent weeks and went down to Brisbane by 42 in Round 9 with the former Bomber, Joe Daniher, registering six goals.
Mason Redman was one of the Bombers best in the loss to the Lions with 30 disposals but a lack of key targets proved costly with his side registering just 45 points in the loss. Loved the way the Bombers started the year but I am reluctant to tip them in this contest against Richmond after the respective results last weekend.
