AFL Ladder Explained
The AFL ladder ranks all 18 teams across the 24-round home and away season. Teams earn four premiership points for a win and two for a draw. When teams are level on points, the ladder position is determined by percentage (points for divided by points against, multiplied by 100).
Ten teams are in contention at the end of the home and away season. The top six qualify for the finals proper directly, while 7th to 10th meet in the Wildcard Round from 28 to 30 August for the last two places. Use the tool above to make your predicted finish, then read the five-week bracket through to the Grand Final at the MCG on Saturday 26 September.
AFL Finals System
For 2026 the AFL added a Wildcard Round in place of the pre-finals bye, the first change to the finals framework since 2000. It is the one structural difference from the NRL, which still takes a straight top eight:

Finishing in the top six is the new prize: those teams skip the Wildcard Round and get the weekend off that used to come with the pre-finals bye. The top four keep a second chance on top of that, because they can lose a Qualifying Final and still progress through the Semi-Finals, while the sides seeded 5th to 8th face immediate elimination.
Tips for Building Your 2026 AFL Ladder Prediction
When building your predicted AFL ladder for the 2026 season, weight these factors in your call:
- Fixture difficulty — The AFL fixture is unbalanced. The 2026 draw lines up brutal back-end runs for several mid-table contenders, so the team that’s 5th in May isn’t necessarily the team that’s 5th in August. Check the AFL draw and weight your call toward sides with kinder run-home schedules.
- Percentage matters — Unlike the NRL (which uses points differential), the AFL uses percentage.
