AFL Ladder Explained
The AFL ladder ranks all 18 teams across the 24-round home and away season. Teams earn four premiership points for a win and two for a draw. When teams are level on points, the ladder position is determined by percentage (points for divided by points against, multiplied by 100).
The top eight teams at the end of the home and away season qualify for the AFL finals series. Use our tool above to make your AFL top 8 predictions and AFL finals predictions, which runs across four weeks in September, culminating in the AFL Grand Final at the MCG.
AFL Finals System
The AFL uses a top-eight finals system identical in structure to the NRL:
| Week | Match | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | 1st vs 4th, 2nd vs 3rd | Qualifying Finals (losers get second chance) |
| Week 1 | 5th vs 8th, 6th vs 7th | Elimination Finals (lose and you’re out) |
| Week 2 | QF losers vs EF winners | Semi-Finals |
| Week 3 | 2 matches | Preliminary Finals |
| Week 4 | Grand Final (MCG) | AFL Premiership decider |
Finishing in the top four gives a crucial second chance — those teams can afford to lose in Qualifying Finals and still progress via Semi-Finals, while teams 5th-8th face immediate elimination.
Tips for Building Your 2026 AFL Ladder Prediction
When building your predicted AFL ladder for the 2026 season, weight these factors in your call:
- Fixture difficulty — The AFL fixture is unbalanced. The 2026 draw lines up brutal back-end runs for several mid-table contenders, so the team that’s 5th in May isn’t necessarily the team that’s 5th in August. Check the AFL draw and weight your call toward sides with kinder run-home schedules.
- Percentage matters — Unlike the NRL (which uses points differential), the AFL uses percentage. Big-margin wins early in the year build a buffer that’s often the difference between 8th and 9th when the dust settles. Sydney’s percentage advantage in 2026 has been the kind of cushion that historically translates to a top-two finish.
- Travel burden — Interstate travel still affects some clubs more than others. The Tasmanian fortress (Hawthorn at UTAS Stadium / York Park) and Optus Stadium for Fremantle have been the standout home-ground edges of 2026. Build that into your prediction for the WA and Tassie-based contenders.
- Injury and suspension — A 24-round season is a marathon. The 2026 bottom-four — Richmond, Essendon, West Coast, Carlton — have all been thin-list teams unable to absorb injuries to key personnel. Premiership contenders need depth at every line, not just star power.
- Betting markets — Premiership and top 8 odds reflect where the smart money sits. The 2026 premiership market has firmed around Sydney with a chasing pack of Fremantle, Hawthorn, Brisbane and Melbourne — useful as a sanity check for your top-four call. Compare your prediction with the latest AFL premiership odds.
- Historical form — Some clubs consistently perform in September (Geelong, Sydney, Brisbane), while others have struggled to translate home-and-away dominance into finals success. The AFL finals format rewards consistency, particularly the top-four double-chance — predicting which sides will be there is half the battle.
