The first Group 1 of the Melbourne spring went to the outsider of the market’s top half. My Gladiola, a four-year-old mare on 56.5kg out of barrier six, beat home our best bet Cavalry Girl, with the 3yo Natural Fling third at the head of the market. The two market principals both underperformed: Natural Fling was sent out favourite and could only place, and top weight Giga Kick ($4.80) finished tenth of thirteen.

How our tips went
Best bet: Cavalry Girl: second. The read was that a mare on an unbroken 212111 sequence would handle a flat, galloping Sandown 1000m better than the tight Valley trip, and she did run her race from barrier five. She was simply beaten by one better on the day at a bigger price. A place return rather than a win, and no complaints about the process.
Value play: Natural Fling: third. The weight-for-age angle was that a three-year-old getting 6.5kg from the mares was overpriced each-way. The market got there first: she started $3.00 favourite rather than the each-way price the angle assumed, and barrier 13 cost her the run we wanted. Right horse, wrong price, and the each-way case largely evaporated once she firmed.
The winner is the honest lesson. My Gladiola came in on 3-2047, a form line that read like a horse out of sorts, and the flat Sandown circuit suited a type the Valley form book would have filtered out. When a Group 1 moves track, the form that transfers is not always the form that looks best on paper.

The race is normally run under lights at Moonee Valley, which has long made it a distinctive Group 1 in the sprint calendar; the 2026 running is an afternoon race at Sandown while the Valley is rebuilt.
