Lead-In Races
The main lead-ins are the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m), Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) and Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick. Many of the country’s best milers converge on the Epsom as their primary spring objective.
2026 lead-up form. The Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap over 1400m at Randwick on 19 September went to General Salute ($12.00, Tim Clark, Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou), with Matcha Latte ($13.00) second and the favourite Headley Grange ($4.00) third under the topweight of 61kg. The Group 2 Tramway Stakes over 1400m went to Headley Grange, by a nose from Soothsayer, with Attica running on for third. Two double-figure prices filling the first two placings in the Epsom’s classic lead-up is worth noting: this is a handicap that rewards well-weighted horses, and the Epsom itself is the same puzzle on a bigger stage.
🏆 Result: God’s Window ($26, Chris Waller, apprentice Siena Grima) won the 2026 Epsom with 50kg by 1.68 lengths from the topweight Ceolwulf, with Tom Kitten third.

How our tip went. Neither landed. Autumn Boy started the $3.80 favourite and finished seventh, and Attica ran ninth. Well Written, the danger we flagged, was sixth on her first start in Australia. The race went to a lightly weighted outsider: God’s Window carried the 50kg minimum on a track that was Soft 6 by race time. Ceolwulf, the 2024 winner, ran a big race under 59kg to finish second. Lady Shenandoah and Panova were scratched on race day, along with Hellsing.

Nineteen runners accepted for Saturday 3 October, and Hellsing has since been scratched, leaving 18. Randwick was rated Soft 5 at acceptances and upgraded to Good 4 on Friday. Chris Waller has seven runners.

Our best bet: Autumn Boy (barrier 1), with Attica each-way. Autumn Boy won last year’s Caulfield Guineas and was second to Sheza Alibi in the Makybe Diva at Flemington last start. His stable says she is the only horse to have beaten him over a mile. He has drawn the inside with James McDonald back aboard and carries 55.5kg, 3.5kg under the topweight.
Attica is the each-way play on weight. He won the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes over 2000m last spring, charged home for third in the Tramway last start, and gets in with 51.5kg from barrier 6. His connections have had this race as his early-season target. The danger is Well Written, unbeaten in seven starts in New Zealand, including the Group 1 Proisir Plate over 1400m last start. She is the class runner in the field but is having her first start in Australia, in a handicap, from barrier 3.
Worth noting: Lady Shenandoah won the 2024 Flight Stakes over this course and distance, and Ceolwulf, the 2024 winner, is back as topweight on 59kg.
