Here are the latest happenings in the AFL 2025 at the end of round 4.
Magpies Heap the Blues on Carlton
Collingwood 8.15 (63) def. Carlton 6.10 (46)
A defensively sound Collingwood made it three wins on the bounce during a slippery encounter at the MCG on Thursday night as they downed Carlton by 17 points. It was a case of the same old story for the Blues as they surrendered a half-time lead for the fourth game in a row. This increasingly predictable collapse leaves Carlton 0-4 after as many fixtures, with pressure mounting on the Blues early in the season.
Cats Outmuscle Demons
Geelong 12.13 (85) def. Melbourne 6.10 (46)
Patrick Dangerfield led the charge as Geelong claimed a 39-point win over Melbourne in a back-and-forth clash at GMHBA Stadium on Friday night. The Demons were competitive for large stretches but faded late on with the Cats pulling away in the final term to notch a relatively comfortable victory. Inspired by Dangerfield’s timely majors on either side of the break, Geelong made it four from four to start the season. For Melbourne, it’s an unwelcome milestone — their winless start is their worst after four rounds since 2012.
Suns Eclipse Crows in Thriller
Gold Coast 13.13 (91) def. Adelaide 14.6 (90)
Gold Coast edged Adelaide by a single point in what might be the game of the 2025 season so far, with a dramatic finish at Heritage Bank Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Round 4 clash wasn’t without controversy though, as the umpires opted not to give Izak Rankine a free kick inside 50 in the last two minutes, with the Crows behind by less than a kick. This late drama sees the Suns remain unbeaten while Adelaide taste defeat for the first time this year in gut-wrenching circumstances.
Lions End 16-Year Hoodoo Against Tigers With MCG Win
Richmond 13.12 (90) def. by Brisbane 18.10 (118)
Brisbane continued their perfect start to the 2025 season with a 28-point win over Richmond at the MCG on Saturday afternoon. Thanks to the midfield efforts of Josh Dunkley, Hugh McCluggage, Lachie Neale and Will Ashcroft, the Lions were able to outmuscle the Tigers at the coalface and record their first win at the ‘G against Richmond since 2009. Michael Voss’ men are now 4-0, while it’s a hat-trick of defeats for the toothless Tigers.
Swans Thump Roos
North Melbourne 8.4 (52) def. by Sydney 19.9 (118)
North Melbourne were comprehensively beaten by Sydney on Saturday night at Marvel Stadium with the Swans cruising to a 65-point victory. The damage was done up front as Will Hayward and Joel Amartey combined for eight goals while Riley Bice anchored the defence with an impressive 26 disposals, 15 marks, and nine intercepts. For the Roos, such a heavy loss against a Swans side missing several key players will be a major cause for concern.
Giants Down Eagles
GWS Giants 20.12 (132) def. West Coast 7.9 (51)
Jesse Hogan ran riot at the Sydney Showground as the key forward bagged eight goals for the Giants as they smashed West Coast by 81 points on Sunday. It was another bruising afternoon for the Eagles, whose naive defending was there to be exploited. Andrew McQualter’s men are now 0-4 with any hopes of a finals tilt hanging by a thread, even at this early stage of the season.
Saints Subdue the Power
Port Adelaide 10.12 (72) def. by St Kilda 13.11 (89)
St Kilda claimed a hard-fought 17-point win over Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Sunday afternoon, eventually overcoming a strong individual showing from midfielder Jason Horne-Francis who racked up 28 disposals and slotted three goals. The Power started and finished the opening quarter on a high, kicking the first and last majors, but it was the damage done in between that proved costly, conceding six unanswered goals as the Saints set up a rare win at the Adelaide Oval.
Dockers Win Arm Wrestle
Fremantle 15.7 (97) def. Westen Bulldogs 12.9 (81)
Fremantle held on to defeat the Western Bulldogs by 16 points at Optus Stadium on Sunday afternoon despite a tense finish. The Bulldogs, who still haven’t lost a fourth quarter this season, fought hard to win the final term but were unable to claw back the advantage. For Freo, the result was set up by the tenacious work of midfielder Caleb Serong who finished with 38 disposals in a standout performance.
