St Kilda vs Western Bulldogs

Bulldogs to win with -20.5 handicap

Round 14 kicks off at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night with St Kilda hosting the Western Bulldogs. The Saints have managed just one win from their last four and remain the only side to have lost to West Coast this season — a stat that says plenty about where they’re at. While the Dogs have had the same 1-3 stretch, they still pass the eye test. There’s a clear edge in ball movement and midfield depth, and they’re very much in the finals mix.

This might not be a thriller, but the Bulldogs’ work rate and pressure should eventually wear down a St Kilda outfit whose season is slipping away.

Hawthorn vs Adelaide Crows

Crows to win by 1-39 points

Hawthorn and Adelaide’s clash at the University of Tasmania Stadium on Friday night sees sixth take on third. There’s virtually nothing between the two sides in the latest odds, with a close encounter on the cards. Notwithstanding this, there’s a clear trend with the Hawks against top-four opposition — they’ve lost to the Pies, Lions, and Suns in the last month. The Crows, meanwhile, have won three in a row, including a statement win over the reigning premiers — something Hawthorn couldn’t manage.

We’re backing Adelaide to edge this Friday night showdown in Tassie.

Brisbane vs GWS Giants

Lions to win by 1-39 points

Brisbane and the GWS Giants get the Saturday round underway at the Gabba with a top-eight clash and a replay of last year’s thrilling semi-final. Both sides have shown signs of wear in recent weeks, with the battle of attrition across the league starting to tell. The Lions have won just two of their last five, while the Giants scraped past lowly Richmond by three points in Round 12 before suffering a loss against Port Adelaide in Round 13. It’s fair to say both clubs are due a statement performance.

This game feels like one that’s up for grabs, but we’re backing Brisbane to steady at home — just — in what should be another close one between these two.

Essendon vs Geelong

Cats to win by 40+ points

Essendon and Geelong go head-to-head at the MCG on Saturday evening in a match the visitors will be confident of winning. The Cats arrive having won their last four games, which has seen them surge into the top four — even their losses this season have been close contests.

Make no mistake, the Cats are a team with genuine flag credentials, and we’re sure they will sweep aside the Bombers, who are staring down the barrel of a third straight defeat in the league.

North Melbourne vs Fremantle

Dockers to win by 1-39 points

North Melbourne and Fremantle clash on Saturday night at Optus Stadium in what could be the most one-sided fixture of Round 14. The Kangaroos come in with a 3-8-1 record and virtually no chance of making the finals. Fremantle, 7-5, currently sit in eighth and will see this game as a vital chance to strengthen their finals push.

We’re tipping Fremantle to hand the Roos their ninth defeat of the season.

Port Adelaide vs Melbourne

Power to win by 1-39 points

Port Adelaide and Melbourne come into their Sunday clash at Adelaide Oval with similar records — the Power at 5-7 and the Demons 5-8, having played one more game. The Dees only sit above Port on the ladder thanks to a better percentage. Last year, each side claimed a narrow win in their head-to-heads — Port by three points, Melbourne by seven.

We expect this 15th vs 14th place clash to be another tight contest, with the Power — fresh off a win over the Giants — just edging it.

West Coast v Carlton

The Blues to win with -25.5 handicap

West Coast and Carlton bring the curtain down on Round 14 with a Sunday afternoon clash at Optus Stadium. It’s now damage control for the Eagles as they sit bottom of the ladder with a 1-12 record: there are whipping boys — and then there’s West Coast. While the Blues haven’t exactly set the season alight with a lukewarm 5-7 record, they’ll still believe a finals push is possible.

We think they’ll do what almost every other side in the AFL has done and dispatch the Eagles with little fuss.
