Port Adelaide vs Carlton
Power to win and total points under 164.5
Round 16 kicks off with two sides locked at 6-8 as Port Adelaide host Carlton at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday night. It’s been a season of inconsistency for both clubs, with neither able to generate sustained momentum. Port have won just two of their last six, while Carlton’s modest two-game revival was brought to a halt by 16th-placed North Melbourne last week.
This clash between the erratic is wide open but we’re backing Port to get the job done at home, and for the total points to stay under 164.5. None of the Power’s last five games have cleared 162 points, while each of Carlton’s last three have stayed under 160.
Sydney Swans vs Western Bulldogs
Bulldogs to win by 25+
Sydney host the AFL’s flat-track bullies on Friday night, with the Western Bulldogs heading to the SCG boasting a clear trend — they beat up on the bottom half. The Dogs are 1-6 against the top seven but a perfect 7-0 against sides outside the eight. That spells trouble for the 11th-placed Swans, who have shown little to suggest they can buck the trend.
We’re backing the Bulldogs to do what they do best — punish the strugglers — and win by 25+.
Gold Coast vs Melbourne
Suns to win by 1-39 points
Gold Coast’s season has stalled with three straight losses, but they’ve got a golden chance to reignite their finals push when they host Melbourne at Heritage Bank Stadium on Saturday. The Demons, fresh off a bye, have also lost three in a row — but whether it’s the reset they need or just a pause in the slide remains to be seen. The bigger question might be whether this is a good time to face the Suns.
We’re backing Damien Hardwick’s Suns to respond at home and stay in touch with the top eight — but don’t expect a blowout.
Hawthorn vs North Melbourne
Hawks to win by 1-39 points
In red-hot form after back-to-back wins, Hawthorn travel to Tasmania on Saturday to take on a North Melbourne side still searching for consistency. The Roos have shown flickers of progress since that surprise 71–71 draw with Brisbane in early May, but these are still the types of games they tend to let slip, especially against a side pushing for top-five contention.
We’re backing the Hawks to continue their upward trend, but North should make them earn it.
Collingwood vs West Coast
Pies to win by 40+ points
The final Round 16 clash on Saturday pits first against 18th as Collingwood host West Coast at Marvel Stadium. This could be the most one-sided fixture of the season, with the ladder leaders (12-2) taking on the wooden spoon favourites (1-13). It’s not a question of who will win, but by how much.
We’re backing the Pies to smash the Eagles by 40+.
Richmond vs Adelaide
Crows to win by 25+
Adelaide head to the MCG on Sunday with a golden chance for four wins in five when they take on 17th-placed Richmond. It’s been a traumatic season for the Tigers, who have lost their last five games and face the risk of being dragged into a wooden spoon battle with West Coast.
We’re backing the Crows to consolidate their top-four position with a comfortable victory.
Fremantle vs St Kilda
Dockers to win with -22.5 handicap
With their finals hopes all but over, St Kilda head to Optus Stadium on Sunday facing the tough challenge of overcoming Fremantle, who’ve won their last five games. The Saints have been exposed by top-eight opposition in back-to-back rounds, suffering a 72-point hammering from the Bulldogs followed by a 34-point loss to Collingwood.
We’re expecting another tough day for the Saints against a high-class and dominant Dockers side.
