Get ready for all the action with our in-depth previews and predictions for Round 9 of the AFL season.
Fremantle vs Collingwood
Pies to win and total points under 160.5
Fremantle will host Collingwood at Optus Stadium on Thursday night to kick off Round 9. Both teams are coming off Round 8 defeats but in a parallel universe, the Magpies could easily have been on a seven-game winning streak, having narrowly lost to Geelong by just three points. We’re backing the Pies to bounce back and return to winning ways in what should be a low-scoring contest.
St Kilda vs Carlton
Saints to win by 1-39 points
St Kilda and Carlton go head-to-head on Friday night at Marvel Stadium. Both the Saints (4-4) and the Blues (3-5) have struggled for consistency in 2025, but this fixture is usually a tight one. Since 2022, no side has won by more than 20 points, with the Saints edging Carlton by just two in 2024. We’re backing St Kilda to upset the odds and get the job done again by a narrow margin.
Melbourne vs Hawthorn
Hawks to win by 1-39 points
Melbourne will host Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday afternoon with the Demons aiming to make it four wins in a row after a shaky start to the season. The high-flying Hawks might view this as an awkward time to face a resurgent Melbourne side, but we’re still backing Hawthorn to get the job done in a competitive one at the ‘G.
Essendon vs Sydney
Swans to win and total points under 172.5
Sydney will head to Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon for a Round 9 clash with Essendon. The Swans are coming off a Round 8 derby win over the Giants, which provided a ray of optimism in a season where little has gone to plan. Against Essendon, however, recent history is firmly on their side. Dean Cox’s men have beaten the Bombers in their last three meetings dating back to 2023, and we’re backing them to make it four in a low-scoring encounter.
Gold Coast vs Western Bulldogs
Suns to win with +0.5 handicap
Gold Coast will host the Western Bulldogs at TIO Stadium on Saturday afternoon in a top-six clash. The Suns (5-2) have made the most of a favourable early-season fixture list, but as the saying goes, you can only beat what’s in front of you. Damien Hardwick’s side will face a sterner challenge from the Bulldogs (5-3), who arrive on a three-game winning streak, but we’re backing the Suns to hold firm at home and edge this one with the handicap in their favour.
Port Adelaide vs Adelaide
Crows to win by 1-39 points
Round 9 brings the first Showdown of the season as Port Adelaide and Adelaide battle it out for bragging rights on Saturday night. The Crows come into the derby with a slightly better record (5-3) than the Power (4-4), but as we know, form often goes out the window in these encounters. That said, we’re backing the surging Crows to get the job done in a tight game.
Richmond vs West Coast
Tigers to win by 1-39 points
Richmond will host West Coast at the MCG on Sunday afternoon in a bottom-of-the-ladder clash. The Tigers will view the visit of the embattled Eagles as much-needed respite, with West Coast being the only team in the AFL in 2025 yet to record a win. We’re backing that streak to continue, with Richmond set to enjoy a rare victory.
Geelong vs GWS Giants
Cats to win with -14.5 handicap
Geelong and the GWS Giants face off at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday afternoon in a clash between seventh and eighth on the ladder. The Cats will be full of confidence after snapping Collingwood’s six-game winning streak, and we’re backing them to exploit a Giants side still struggling to find their range.
North Melbourne vs Brisbane
Lions to win by 40+ points
Round 9 wraps up with North Melbourne hosting Brisbane at Marvel Stadium on Sunday evening. This shapes up as the most one-sided contest of the round, with the Kangaroos sitting 17th and the Lions perched at the top of the ladder. We can’t see anything other than a comfortable win for the reigning premiers against a Roos side struggling across the park.
