The Swans blew Carlton away on Thursday night with a remarkable third-quarter blitz at the SCG. Dean Cox’s side piled on 12 goals in a chaotic 41-minute term after trailing early in the second half, with Isaac Heeney and Errol Gulden driving the midfield surge.
Justin McInerney and Logan McDonald sparked the momentum change, while Matt Roberts added two eye-catching goals during the burst. From that point the result was never in any doubt. Sydney’s surge flipped the contest entirely and delivered a commanding 63-point win on Gadigal land to open the season.
Petracca Stars as Suns Stun Cats in Opening Round
Gold Coast 19.11 (125) def. Geelong 10.9 (69)
Gold Coast delivered one of the standout performances of Opening Round as they defeated Geelong by 56 points at People First Stadium on Friday night. With 34 disposals and three goals, Christian Petracca dominated his first match in Suns colours and set the tone through the middle.
Bailey Humphrey kicked four majors after a blistering opening quarter and was helped by Ben King, who added four of his own as the Suns built a lead that stretched well beyond half-time. Geelong steadied late through Ollie Dempsey’s four goals, but the result was largely decided long before the final siren. For Gold Coast, it was an emphatic start against last season’s grand finalists.
Stringer Fires as Giants Hold Off Hawks in Opening Round
Greater Western Sydney 19.8 (122) def. Hawthorn 14.11 (95)
Greater Western Sydney opened their campaign on Saturday afternoon with a 27-point win over Hawthorn at ENGIE Stadium, reversing the disappointment of last year’s elimination final defeat. Jake Stringer starred with five goals in a powerful display up forward, while Jesse Hogan added three, including the 400th major of his AFL career.
Clayton Oliver also impressed in his Giants debut, finishing with 27 disposals and nine clearances. The hosts seized control early with a rapid five-goal burst and carried that momentum into a 35-point halftime lead. Hawthorn rallied late through Jack Gunston and Nick Watson, before debutant Phoenix Gothard’s curling goal in the final minutes secured the Giants’ win.
Bulldogs Storm Home to Edge Lions in Gabba Thriller
Western Bulldogs 16.15 (111) def. Brisbane 15.16 (106)
The Western Bulldogs produced one of the most dramatic finishes of Opening Round after storming home to defeat Brisbane by five points at the Gabba. Trailing by 26 points late in the third quarter, the Dogs piled on seven final-term goals to snatch the result on Saturday night.
Ed Richards was outstanding with 30 disposals, two goals, and 16 score involvements. Marcus Bontempelli was just as influential, adding three majors in another commanding outing. Tim English kicked the decisive goal after a long run forward in the final minutes. Brisbane had their chances, particularly through Charlie Cameron’s four goals and Lachie Neale’s 39 disposals, but it wasn’t to be for the Lions during a nail-biter at the Gabba.
Magpies Hold Firm as Saints Fall Short at the MCG
Collingwood 11.12 (78) def. St Kilda 9.12 (66)
Collingwood closed Opening Round on Sunday afternoon with a 12-point victory over St Kilda in front of 82,528 fans at the MCG. Jordan De Goey led the scoring with three goals as Beau McCreery added two during a crucial third-quarter burst.
Nick Daicos once again controlled large stretches of the game, finishing with 41 disposals, while brother Josh and Scott Pendlebury provided experience and composure around the contest. St Kilda created periods of strong midfield pressure and saw solid contributions from Jack Sinclair, Mitch Owens and Cooper Sharman. Collingwood’s composure in the final minutes ultimately decided the contest.
