AFL 2025: Round 11 in Focus
Cats Beat Dogs
Geelong 20.7 (127) def. Bulldogs 16.17 (113)
Geelong’s clash with the Western Bulldogs at GMHBA Stadium on Thursday night was billed as the game of Round 11 — and it lived up to the hype. The Cats held on for a 14-point win in an action-packed contest, but not before a third-quarter scare. After leading by 32 points at the main break, Geelong saw their margin whittled down to just 10 points as the Bulldogs mounted an unexpected comeback. That was until a controversial late mark call halted their surge, as the Cats regrouped and closed out the match. Jeremy Cameron was instrumental, finishing with six goals, while Shannon Neale enjoyed a breakout performance with a career-best five majors to help seal the win.
Bombers Bounce Back
Essendon 11.15 (81) def. Richmond 8.10 (58)
Essendon bounced back from a 91-point drubbing at the hands of the Bulldogs in Round 10 to defeat Richmond by 23 points at the MCG on Friday night. In a scrappy contest short on quality, the Bombers put the result beyond doubt in the second half with four consecutive goals to overcome an injury-ravaged Tigers side in transition.
Giants Stamp on Blues’ Season
Carlton 12.10 (82) def. by GWS Giants 17.8 (110)
Carlton’s finals hopes took a major hit at Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon as the Giants outclassed the Blues by 28 points. Toby Greene was the standout for the visitors, racking up 28 influential disposals and booting three goals. The loss leaves Carlton with a 4–7 record and fading fast in the race for a top-eight finish, showing few signs of mounting a serious push up the ladder.
Lions Finally Roar at MCG
Hawthorn 8.12 (60) def. by Brisbane 14.9 (93)
Brisbane ended a winless run against Hawthorn at the MCG stretching back to 2004 with a convincing 33-point victory — a result that should send a warning to the rest of the competition. The Lions also hadn’t beaten the Hawks in their last five meetings and came into the match off the back of two disappointing rounds. But a first-half hat-trick from Charlie Cameron gave Chris Fagan’s side the platform to deliver a statement win.
Marvel Turnaround for Pies
North Melbourne 9.9 (63) def. by Collingwood 15.18 (108)
Collingwood were made to work for their 45-point win at Marvel Stadium on Saturday, coming up against a North Melbourne side that, for three quarters, didn’t resemble a team anchored to the bottom of the ladder. While the Kangaroos brought admirable energy and pressure, the Pies found another gear in the final term, piling on eight goals to seal the result and cement their spot at the top of the ladder after Round 11.
Power Blowout Again
Fremantle 15.10 (100) def. Port Adelaide 7.9 (51)
Port Adelaide’s troubling trend of heavy defeats continued at a damp Optus Stadium on Saturday as the Power were overrun by a powerful Fremantle outfit to the tune of 49 points. The Dockers never trailed at any stage and were led by Murphy Reid, who booted four goals to keep Freo firmly in the hunt for a top-eight spot.
Crows Take Down Eagles
Adelaide 19.14 (128) def. West Coast 8.14 (62)
Adelaide ran riot in the second half against West Coast on Sunday afternoon at Adelaide Oval, storming into the top four with a dominant 66-point win. The Crows couldn’t shake the Eagles by half-time, with the visitors trailing by just 17 points at the main break. But a second-half surge — including 11 goals across the final two quarters — saw Adelaide blow the game open and cruise to victory at home.
Resurgent Demons Torment Swans
Melbourne 19.17 (131) def. Sydney 12.6 (78)
Melbourne continued their 2025 revival with a commanding 53-point win over the Swans at the MCG on Sunday. Once again, Kysaiah Pickett proved to be the difference, booting five goals in an eye-catching performance. It was another bruising afternoon for Sydney, who were categorically outclassed by a red-hot Demons outfit.
Suns Eclipse Saints
St Kilda 8.13 (61) def. by Gold Coast 12.8 (80)
Gold Coast secured their eighth win of the season with a 19-point triumph over St Kilda at Marvel Stadium on Sunday. In a game lacking genuine quality, the Suns made the most of their chances, while the Saints let theirs slip. St Kilda had dominated the rivalry with nine wins from the previous ten meetings, but their inaccuracy cost them the chance to extend that run. The result lifts Gold Coast to third on the ladder.
