Here’s AFL 2025: Round 12 in focus.
Lions Avoid Bombers Scare
Brisbane 13.12 (90) def. Essendon 11.6 (72)
Brisbane survived a spirited comeback from Essendon to temporarily move to the top of the ladder on Thursday night at the Gabba. The Lions raced to a commanding 32-point lead after the opening quarter, having booted six of the game’s first seven goals, and it looked like another one-sided Essendon mauling was on the cards.
However, the Bombers, led by Nate Caddy, fought back fiercely, eventually levelling the scores in the third quarter. Spooked, the Lions wrestled control back and closed out the final quarter with composure, securing an 18-point win and guaranteeing a top-two finish at the end of Round 12.
Pies Too Hot to Handle
Collingwood 16.11 (107) def. Hawthorn 8.8 (56)
In a highly anticipated clash billed as experience versus youth, Collingwood left the AFL in no doubt about who ruled the roost, recording a commanding 51-point win against Hawthorn at the MCG on Friday evening. The game was all but decided in the second quarter as the Pies kicked six goals to open up an unassailable lead. It’s now three defeats on the bounce for the Hawks, who will aim to be much improved when these two meet again on August 7th.
Dockers Shine on Gold Coast
Gold Coast 9.10 (64) def. by Fremantle 11.9 (75)
Fremantle made it three wins on the trot with an 11-point victory over Gold Coast at Heritage Bank Stadium on Saturday. This ever-improving Freo side looked in control from the outset, slotting five of the game’s first seven majors to put the Suns on the back foot early. Gold Coast threatened a late comeback, with Sam Flanders sparking life into the contest with two superb goals in the final term. But Jye Amiss, composed under pressure, sealed the deal with a clutch goal that halted the Suns’ momentum and lifted the Dockers into the top eight.
Giants Dodge Upset
GWS Giants 12.8 (80) def. Richmond 10.17 (77)
The Giants narrowly avoided slipping on the proverbial banana skin against Richmond at ENGIE Stadium on Saturday — but only just. The Tigers had surged to a 34-point lead as the final quarter approached, but incredibly, they weren’t able to kick another major. As a result, the Giants stormed home by booting the last six goals of the contest to snatch the narrowest of wins by just three points.
Crows Maul Swans
Sydney 5.11 (41) def. by Adelaide 21.5 (131)
Adelaide snapped a six-game losing streak against Sydney by tearing the Swans apart at the SCG, eventually winning by a staggering 90 points on what may prove to be the darkest night of the Swans’ season. The match was effectively over by halftime, with the hoodoo stretching back to 2019 finally broken as the Crows piled on 12 unanswered goals before the Swans could muster a response.
Saints Slay Demons
Melbourne 7.21 (63) def. by St Kilda 14.7 (91)
St Kilda halted Melbourne’s resurgence at Traeger Park on Sunday with a well-earned 28-point victory. The Demons will rue their inaccuracy in front of goal, which may see their recent revival labelled short-lived. The reality is that the Saints were irresistible from the outset, booting six goals in the opening quarter to set the tone for a dominant performance that keeps their season just about alive.
Cats Pounce on Eagles
West Coast 11.7 (73) def. by Geelong 17.14 (116)
Geelong consolidated their place in the top five of the ladder with a 43-point win over West Coast at Optus Stadium. What might have looked like a straightforward assignment on paper turned out to be a tooth-and-nail battle, only secured thanks to a late surge from the Cats. At one stage, Geelong led by five majors, only to see that margin cut to just 11 points as the Eagles refused to go down without a fight.
However, as has so often been the case for West Coast this season, they couldn’t sustain their momentum. Four final-quarter goals from Jeremy Cameron eventually put paid to a resilient Eagles effort.
