AFL 2025: Round 13 in Focus

Hawks Stop Freefall

Western Bulldogs 8.11 (59) def. by Hawthorn 12.9 (81)

The Hawks arrested the freefall they were in after beating the Bulldogs by 22 points at Marvel Stadium on Thursday evening. Sam Mitchell’s side had lost three consecutive games coming into the Round 13 opener but clinically put the Dogs away, never once falling behind in the contest. Mabior Chol’s four majors gave the Hawks the thrust they needed to lift off and soar back into the top eight.

Crows Stun Lions

Adelaide 10.8 (68) def. Brisbane 8.15 (63)

Adelaide sent another shockwave through the AFL on Friday night at Adelaide Oval, edging out Brisbane by five points in a thriller. It was a result that looked unlikely after the Lions’ defence kept the Crows scoreless in the opening term — the first time that’s happened in three years. Despite trailing by 17 points at three-quarter time, the Crows booted five unanswered goals to complete a statement comeback win over the reigning premiers.

Swans Soar as Tigers Fade

Richmond 4.12 (36) def. by Sydney 11.14 (80)

Sydney outgunned an inexperienced Richmond side on Saturday afternoon at the MCG, lifting their season off the floor with a 44-point win. The Tigers roared early and looked to have the Swans pinned down, storming into the lead at quarter-time after booting three majors. But Adem Yze’s side couldn’t sustain their early intensity, managing just one more goal — late in the final term — as Sydney took full control to notch their first win since mid-May.

Home Comforts Continue for Cats

Geelong 9.7 (61) def. Gold Coast 5.7 (37)

Geelong preserved their flawless home record this season with a 24-point win over Gold Coast at GMHBA Stadium. The Suns came into the match winless in eight attempts at the venue and never looked likely to break that hoodoo, with the Cats booting the first two majors as the rain pelted down. Chris Scott’s Cats purred into a higher gear after half-time, comprehensively controlling the contest to move into the top four.

Power Topple Giants

GWS Giants 7.8 (50) def. by Port Adelaide 9.12 (66)

Port Adelaide pulled off the upset of Round 13, toppling a lacklustre GWS side by 16 points at Manuka Oval on Saturday night. The Power arrived in Canberra on the back of four straight losses but stood tall defensively and showed real fight, with Zak Butters racking up 32 disposals and Connor Rozee adding 28 in a standout midfield display. For the Giants, this costly misstep follows a flat showing against Richmond last week, raising fresh concerns about their intensity against weaker opposition.

Roos Rally Late to Sink Eagles

North Melbourne 9.8 (62) def. West Coast 6.16 (52)

North Melbourne prevailed in the cellar-dwellers clash at Hands Oval on Sunday afternoon, handing West Coast their 12th loss in 13 games this season. Andrew McQualter will wonder how his side contrived to lose a game they led by 18 points in the final quarter, before the Roos booted a hat-trick of majors to swing the game and ultimately heap more misery on the hapless Eagles.

Blues Hold Out Against Bombers

Carlton 11.12 (78) def. Essendon 11.4 (70)

A rejuvenated Carlton side, fresh off a bye in Round 12, snapped a poor run of three losses in four by edging out Essendon by eight points at the MCG on Sunday. It wasn’t without drama—after leading by 28 at half-time, the Blues were almost overrun as the Bombers slammed home four quick majors. But a dogged Carlton rearguard, led by Tom De Koning and George Hewett, held firm to secure a gritty win.

Magpies Fend off Demons

Melbourne 10.11 (71) def. by Collingwood 11.6 (72)

Collingwood moved six points clear at the top of the ladder after edging out Melbourne by a single point in a pulsating King’s Birthday clash at the MCG on Monday. The Demons were good value despite the loss, pushing the 2025 Grand Final favourites all the way and even briefly hitting the front in the final term. But Dan McStay stepped up with a clutch major to turn the tide — and, true to form, the Pies held their nerve under the cosh to close out another thriller.
