AFL 2025: Round 14 in Focus
Dogs Maul Saints Again
St Kilda 8.12 (60) def. by Western Bulldogs 20.12 (132)
It was déjà vu at Marvel Stadium as the Western Bulldogs dismantled St Kilda for the second time this season. After thrashing the Saints by 71 points in April, the Dogs went one better on Thursday night, recording a 72-point demolition. Sam Darcy was instrumental up forward, slotting three goals and helping lift his side, at least briefly, into the top eight.
Hawks Win Thriller
Hawthorn 6.11 (47) def. Adelaide 5.14 (44)
In some of the coldest conditions of the season, it was Hawthorn who ran hottest at the University of Tasmania Stadium on Friday night, clawing their way to a gritty three-point comeback win over Adelaide. The Crows will rue their inaccuracy, managing just 4.7 by half-time in a game where every point counted. Meanwhile, the Hawks soar to fifth on the ladder and head into their upcoming bye with one eye firmly on a top-four finish.
Giants Stamp Their Authority
Brisbane 13.18 (96) def. by GWS Giants 17.5 (107)
The Giants answered their critics in style, overcoming Brisbane by 11 points at the Gabba on Saturday to snap a patchy run of form. In a seesawing contest, it was the second half where GWS made their move, booting seven of the game’s eight goals in a decisive burst that gave them a lead the Lions couldn’t haul in.
Cats Sink Sorry Bombers
Essendon 8.8 (56) def. by Geelong 23.13 (151)
It was carnage for Essendon at the MCG on Saturday as a nightmare second half saw them thrashed by 95 points at the hands of a ruthless Geelong. The rampaging Cats slammed home 14 goals after the main break, turning the contest into a rout. For the Bombers, it’s now three losses on the trot—and they find themselves drifting dangerously into no man’s land on the ladder.
Dockers Hold Off Roos
North Melbourne 10.7 (67) def. by Fremantle 10.13 (73)
Fremantle clung onto eighth spot with a nervy six-point win over a spirited North Melbourne at Optus Stadium on Saturday night. The Roos were impressive despite the result, outplaying the Dockers for large stretches. However, a damaging second-quarter surge proved decisive, allowing Freo—now winners of four straight—to stay just ahead in a thriller.
Georgiades Keeps Port’s Season Alive
Port Adelaide 14.9 (93) def. Melbourne 9.14 (68)
Port Adelaide kept their finals hopes alive with a 25-point win over Melbourne at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday, backing up last week’s victory over the Giants. Mitch Georgiades was the standout performer, booting seven goals and delivering scoreboard pressure at crucial moments to keep the Demons at bay. While Port remain alive and kicking, the loss leaves Melbourne clinging to slim finals hopes — and in desperate need of a miracle to crack the top eight.
Blues Go Back to Back
West Coast 7.10 (52) def. by Carlton 12.14 (86)
Carlton notched consecutive wins for the first time since late April with a 34-point triumph over West Coast at Optus Stadium on Sunday. The Blues flew out of the gates, slamming home seven goals in a dominant opening term to leave the Eagles reeling and virtually out of the game by quarter-time. The only blemish for Michael Voss’ side was a calf injury to Charlie Curnow, who was subbed out at halftime. The Blues now face a nervous wait over the fitness of their star forward as they aim to keep their mid-season revival rolling.
