An inspired Geelong comeback at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday night condemned the Crows to their second consecutive defeat. Adelaide led by as much as 30 points and had the ascendancy at the end of every quarter, but couldn’t stop the Cats from pouncing in the final term. Patrick Dangerfield kicked four goals to help swing the momentum as Geelong stormed home. It’s now eight wins from nine for the Cats against the Crows.
Magpies Soar Again at the Adelaide Oval
Collingwood 16.13 (109) def. Sydney 12.6 (78)
Collingwood’s 31-point win over Sydney on Friday night during Gather Round marked their tenth consecutive victory at the Adelaide Oval and their fourth straight win of the 2025 season. Darcy Cameron was instrumental for the Pies, finishing with 24 hitouts, 20 disposals, and five crucial clearances. The 2024 Grand Finalists are now 3-2, having dropped three of their opening five games.
Sizzling Suns Make it 4-0 Against Roos
North Melbourne 11.13 (89) def. by Gold Coast 21.15 (141)
Gold Coast retained their perfect start to the 2025 season with a dominant 52-point win over North Melbourne at Barossa Park on Saturday afternoon. Until deep in the third quarter, this clash was an even affair but the Suns’ midfield wrestled back control in blustery and warm conditions to blow the game open. The Suns are now 4-0 and will face an embattled Richmond side in Round 6 while the Kangaroos are still struggling to kick on, having now suffered their third defeat on the bounce.
The Blues Get Off The Mark
Carlton 17.19 (121) def. West Coast 6.14 (50)
Both sides were desperate to avoid slumping to 0-5 at Adelaide Oval on Saturday afternoon but it was the Eagles who felt the full force of the Blues, as Carlton stormed to their first win of the season. However, the 71-point victory came at a significant cost, with Harry McKay and Brodie Kemp subbed out injured—Kemp now faces an extended spell on the sidelines with a ruptured ACL.
Lions Roar to 5-0 Start
Western Bulldogs 13.19 (97) def. by Brisbane 18.10 (118)
For the first time in 77 years, Brisbane have opened a season with five straight wins after overcoming the Bulldogs by 21 points at Norwood Oval on Saturday evening. It was far from straightforward though as the tenacious Dogs, driven by an industrious midfield, held a healthy lead well into the third quarter and were up by as much as 39 points. But the Lions roared back, mounting a stirring comeback capped by five goals from Eric Hipwood to seal a historic win.
Bombers Down Demons
Melbourne 8.9 (57) def. by Essendon 15.6 (96)
Essendon made it back-to-back wins on Saturday night as they defeated Melbourne by 39 points at the Adelaide Oval. There were flashes of a Demons revival in the second half but ultimately not enough to avoid a disastrous 0-5 start to the 2025 season—their worst opening since the 2012 campaign.
Dockers Tame Tigers
Richmond 7.5 (47) def. by Fremantle 16.12 (108)
A Josh Treacy masterclass at Barossa Park helped Fremantle overpower Richmond by 61 points. Despite the heat, Treacy kicked a personal best six goals to subdue the Tigers who had started brightly but faded in the stifling conditions. It’s now four defeats in a row for Richmond while the Dockers are building momentum with their third consecutive win.
Giants Squash Saints
St Kilda 12.10 (82) def. by GWS Giants 16.14 (110)
The Giants brought an end to St Kilda’s three-game winning streak with a 28-point victory at Norwood Oval on Sunday afternoon. Captain Toby Greene had a Gather Round to remember, booting five goals to help cement the Giants’ place in the top four. For the Saints, it’s a timely reminder of the physicality they’ll need to match if they’re to mix it with the league’s best.
The Power Surge Past Hawks
Port Adelaide 18.13 (121) def. Hawthorn 14.7 (91)
Port Adelaide pulled off the upset of Gather Round, bringing Hawthorn crashing back to earth with a 30-point win at Adelaide Oval on Sunday night. The Power surged to a 71-point lead before the Hawks finally found their rhythm, but the damage was done—denying Hawthorn a fifth straight victory.
