Here’s AFL 2025: Round 9 in Focus

Pies Continue Hot Streak

Fremantle 12.11 (83) def. by Collingwood 15.7 (97)

Collingwood bounced back from an agonising loss to Geelong in Round 8 to overcome Fremantle at Optus Stadium, piling more pressure on Dockers coach Justin Longmuir. Jamie Elliott starred for Collingwood with six goals, helping the Pies secure a 14-point win and briefly move to the top of the ladder on Thursday night.

Courageous Carlton Dig Deep

St Kilda 9.8 (62) def. by Carlton 11.11 (77)

A bare-bones Carlton side ravaged by injuries showed remarkable grit to overcome St Kilda by 15 points at Marvel Stadium on Friday night, despite having just one man on the bench during the second quarter. Harry McKay delivered a standout performance, racking up 19 disposals—including 12 contested—along with 10 marks, two of them contested, and slotting three goals.

Hawks Banish Melbourne Demons

Melbourne 7.14 (56) def. by Hawthorn 13.13 (91)

Hawthorn ended a seven-year drought against Melbourne with a commanding 35-point win at the MCG on Saturday afternoon. Jack Gunston took control in the final quarter for the Hawks, who had the momentum firmly behind them, booting three goals to seal their first victory over the Demons since 2018.

Bombers Win Thriller

Essendon 11.5 (71) def. Sydney 8.15 (63)

An early spree of goals from Essendon proved enough against a spirited Sydney on Saturday night at Marvel Stadium. The Bombers burst out to a 39-point lead by half-time but the Swans hit back hard after the break. In the end, it was a case of missed chances, with Sydney’s inaccuracy in front of goal costing them dearly in an eight-point loss.

Suns Hold Off Determined Dogs

Gold Coast Suns 15.16 (106) def. Western Bulldogs 14.12 (96)

The Gold Coast Suns held off an inspired Western Bulldogs comeback to claim a ten-point win at TIO Stadium and cement their spot in the top four. It was far from straightforward, with the Dogs almost clawing back a five-goal margin and threatening to steal it late. But just as momentum swung, the Suns delivered a clutch goal in the dying seconds to snuff out what might have been the comeback of the season.

Crows Win Showdown

Port Adelaide 12.12 (84) def. by Adelaide 13.11 (89)

Adelaide claimed bragging rights in the 57th edition of the Showdown with a thrilling five-point win at Adelaide Oval. Izak Rankine proved the match winner yet again, booting two late goals to give the Crows just enough breathing room to survive a late Power surge and hang on in a classic.

Tigers Edge Eagles

Richmond 11.15 (81) def. West Coast 11.13 (79)

West Coast’s season plumbed new depths on Sunday at the MCG as the Eagles lost their ninth game in a row. The Eagles hadn’t won at the ‘G since 2021 and a late Tom Lynch point denied them the chance to break that unwanted streak. Richmond’s narrow win creates some breathing room between them and the foot of the ladder.

Giants Extend Record Over Cats

Geelong 14.17 (101) def. by GWS Giants 16.9 (105)

Jesse Hogan’s stellar seven-goal performance led the GWS Giants to a narrow four-point victory over Geelong, marking their fifth consecutive win against the Cats at the GMHBA Stadium, a streak dating back to 2018. Despite having numerous opportunities to change the outcome, Geelong’s inaccuracy in front of goal, with 6.11 from set shots, proved costly in their failure to snap the Giants’ dominance.

Kangaroos Hold Lions to Draw

North Melbourne 10.11 (71) drew with Brisbane 10.11 (71)

North Melbourne and Brisbane played out the first draw of the 2025 season, which was a result few saw coming as the cellar dwellers held the reigning premiers at Marvel Stadium on Sunday. On another day, it could’ve been one of the season’s biggest upsets, but Cam Zurhaar’s late behind with just over a minute left spared the Lions’ blushes.
