Hawthorn hold nerve in high-tempo clash at the MCG
Hawthorn 14.15 (99) def. Sydney Swans 13.4 (82)
Hawthorn created enough chances to absorb an inefficient night in front of goal and still come away with a 17-point win over Sydney. The Hawks spent long stretches camped in their forward half and found answers late as the contest tightened. Jack Gunston’s four goals proved decisive, with two arriving in the final term. Sydney’s aggressive ball movement kept the game alive, but Hawthorn’s defensive setup held firm under sustained pressure.
Western Bulldogs snatch thriller under Adelaide Oval lights
Western Bulldogs 14.10 (94) def. Adelaide Crows 13.10 (88)
A dramatic finish saw the Western Bulldogs edge Adelaide by six points after a contest that swung throughout the night. The Crows charged back in the final term to wipe out a four-goal margin and looked set to take control, but Oskar Baker stepped up with a late goal to turn the game again. Marcus Bontempelli drove the midfield battle, and the visitors steadied under pressure to secure the result.
Suns overpower Tigers as King runs riot at the MCG
Gold Coast SUNS 19.14 (128) def. Richmond 9.6 (60)
Gold Coast pulled away from Richmond with a dominant second half to secure a 68-point win at the MCG. The Suns broke the game open before half-time with a run of unanswered goals and never let the Tigers back in. Ben King was outstanding with seven goals, well supported by Ethan Read’s four. An injury to Christian Petracca took some gloss off the result, but the Suns still had the game on their terms from that point on.
Saints survive late Giants surge in Sydney thriller
St Kilda 11.12 (78) def. GWS GIANTS 10.14 (74)
A fast start proved crucial as a seven-goal burst gave St Kilda control before a late scare at ENGIE Stadium. The Saints dominated early with relentless forward pressure, building a sizeable lead that looked match-winning. That advantage was chipped away after half-time as Greater Western Sydney surged back into the contest. A final-quarter push brought the margin down to a kick, but the visitors held on in a tense finish.
Dockers dismantle Demons with explosive bursts in Perth
Fremantle 17.16 (118) def. Melbourne 10.10 (70)
Fremantle produced two decisive bursts to set up a commanding 48-point win over Melbourne at Optus Stadium. The Dockers blew the game open with a seven-goal first quarter and repeated the damage in the third, overwhelming the Demons with speed and ball movement. Josh Treacy led the way with four goals, assisted by a dominant midfield display from Andrew Brayshaw. Melbourne responded briefly in the second term, but Fremantle quickly reasserted their grip on the game.
Power overwhelm Bombers with early blitz at Adelaide Oval
Port Adelaide 20.13 (133) def. Essendon 10.10 (70)
An early avalanche set the tone as Port Adelaide ran away with a 63-point win over Essendon. Nine unanswered goals from the opening term into the second left the Bombers chasing from a long way back. The midfield battle proved decisive, with Zak Butters and Connor Rozee driving territory and supply. The margin continued to build from there, with Essendon unable to recover after the early setback.
Eagles storm back from 30 down to stun Kangaroos in Perth
West Coast Eagles 17.9 (111) def. North Melbourne 15.4 (94)
A 30-point deficit was wiped out as West Coast turned the contest on its head to claim a 17-point win at Optus Stadium. North Melbourne controlled the early stages and looked set to push clear, but the momentum shifted through the middle quarters. An eight-goal third term broke the game open, with the Eagles surging past their opponents before holding off a late challenge.
