Round 1 and the Melbourne Game
The San Francisco 49ers beat the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 at the MCG on Friday 11 September, in front of 100,021. It was the first NFL regular-season game played in Australia, the seventh-largest regular-season crowd in league history, and an NFC West divisional game that counted for exactly as much as any other Round 1 fixture.

Week 7: The Games Worth Setting an Alarm For
Week 7 runs from Friday 23 October to Tuesday 27 October, 14 games, with Buffalo, Jacksonville, the Chargers and Washington on bye. Every kick-off below is in AEDT except in Queensland, which stays on AEST, an hour earlier. Seven games start at 4am AEDT on the Monday, and Pittsburgh play New Orleans at 12:30am AEDT in Paris.

Our Week 7 best bets
Lines are the US market on 19 October; Australian bookmakers will differ slightly, so take the best number on offer.
- Vikings -5.5 v Colts. Minnesota are 5-0 and have conceded fewer than 13 points a game. Indianapolis have lost two straight, including at home to Tennessee, and are banged up at tight end and cornerback.
- 49ers -4.5 at Falcons. San Francisco are unbeaten with a +67 differential and Atlanta are 2-4. Take 4.5 or better: the 49ers are short at receiver with Samuel out.
- Jets -4.5 v Dolphins. Miami are 0-5, have scored 14 points a game and lost De’Von Achane for the season. A low total suits the favourite.
- Cowboys head to head at Eagles (about $1.46). Philadelphia have scored 106 points in six games and now lose their quarterback. We take the head to head rather than -4.5 in a divisional game that could be low scoring.
The betting read. We are staying off Bengals at Ravens and Buccaneers at Panthers until Lamar Jackson’s ankle and Baker Mayfield’s thumb are clear, because both lines hinge on whether the starter plays. Kansas City as unbeaten underdogs in Seattle is the most interesting price of the week, but Rashee Rice and Travis Kelce are both carrying injuries. NFL Betting Markets We Target
Moneyline: The straight winner. Best used on underdogs the market has over-corrected against after one bad week.
Spread: The handicap. In a league built on parity most games sit inside a touchdown, so the spread is usually the sharper market than the moneyline.
Totals: Over or under the combined points. Weather, pace and a backup quarterback move this line more than reputation does.
Player props: Passing, rushing and receiving yardage, plus anytime touchdown scorers. The softest market in the sport, especially on role changes after an injury.
Futures: Division winners, conference winners and the Super Bowl. Longest hold, so only worth it at a genuine price.
