NRL Ladder Explained
The NRL ladder ranks all 17 teams across the 27-round regular season. Teams earn two competition points for a win and one for a draw. When teams are level on points, the ladder position is determined by points differential (total points scored minus total points conceded).
The top eight teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the NRL finals series, which runs across four weeks in September and October, culminating in the NRL Grand Final.
NRL Finals System
The NRL uses a top-eight finals system with advantages for higher-ranked teams:
| Week | Match | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | 1st vs 4th, 2nd vs 3rd | Qualifying Finals (losers get second chance) |
| Week 1 | 5th vs 8th, 6th vs 7th | Elimination Finals (lose and you’re out) |
| Week 2 | QF losers vs EF winners | Semi-Finals |
| Week 3 | 2 matches | Preliminary Finals |
| Week 4 | Grand Final | NRL Premiership decider |
Finishing in the top four is a major advantage — those teams get a second chance if they lose in week one, while teams finishing 5th-8th face sudden-death elimination.
Tips for Building Your 2026 NRL Ladder Prediction
When making your 2026 NRL ladder prediction, weight these factors in your call:
- Draw difficulty — Some teams face a tougher run in the back half. The 2026 fixture has several of the top contenders meeting late in the season, which can shake up the order at the worst possible time. Check the NRL draw for upcoming matchups.
- Origin impact — The State of Origin window disrupts teams differently. Heavy-Origin clubs (Penrith, Sydney Roosters, Brisbane, Melbourne) often dip mid-season, while lighter-Origin teams gain ground. The 2026 Origin period will be a critical stretch for the top-eight bubble sides — the Cowboys, Sharks, Knights and Bulldogs all sit close enough that an Origin run-on for a rival is a real opportunity to climb.
- Injury toll — Deep squads hold up better across a 27-round season. Teams relying heavily on one or two key spine players are vulnerable, and several 2026 starts have already been derailed by spine injuries (Melbourne’s slide being the standout cautionary tale). When predicting the back end, weight the depth on the bench, not just the starting 17.
- Historical trends — Some clubs consistently finish strongly (Penrith, Storm, Roosters), while others fade. The Panthers’ grip on the modern era is well documented — their 2026 start has shown no early signs of loosening, with the league’s best defensive numbers by a wide margin.
- Betting markets — Premiership odds reflect where the money is going. The 2026 NRL market has settled with Penrith heavily favoured, the Warriors having firmed sharply on their early-season form, and the Roosters and Broncos firming behind them. Compare your prediction with the latest NRL odds.
