NRL Finals Format 2026

The NRL uses the McIntyre Final 8 system — the same format used since 2012. The top 8 teams on the ladder at the end of the 27-round Telstra Premiership home-and-away season qualify for the four-week finals series.

The structure rewards higher finishes:

  • 1st – 4th: Play in Qualifying Finals in Week 1 with double-chance — losing teams drop into the Semi Finals, winning teams advance directly to the Preliminary Finals.
  • 5th – 8th: Play in Elimination Finals in Week 1 with single-chance — winners advance to the Semi Finals, losers are eliminated.
  • All eight teams play in Week 1. By the end of Week 2 only four teams remain. By the end of Week 3 only two. The Grand Final is played in Week 4.

NRL Finals Structure — Who Plays Who?

The McIntyre Final 8 bracket is fixed by ladder position. Higher seeds host across all four weeks of the finals series.

Week Stage Matches Format
Week 1 Qualifying & Elimination Finals QF1: 1st v 4th
QF2: 2nd v 3rd
EF1: 5th v 8th
EF2: 6th v 7th
Higher seed hosts. QF winners advance to Preliminary Finals (Week 3). QF losers drop to Semi Finals (Week 2). EF winners advance to Semi Finals (Week 2). EF losers eliminated.
Week 2 Semi Finals SF1: QF1 loser v lowest-ranked EF winner
SF2: QF2 loser v other EF winner
Higher seed hosts. Winners advance to Preliminary Finals. Losers eliminated.
Week 3 Preliminary Finals PF1: QF1 winner v one Semi Final winner
PF2: QF2 winner v other Semi Final winner
Higher seed hosts. Winners advance to the Grand Final. Losers eliminated.
Week 4 Grand Final PF1 winner v PF2 winner Single match at Accor Stadium, Sydney on the Sunday between 30 September and 6 October.

The McIntyre Final 8 System Explained

Why is it called the McIntyre Final 8? The system was designed by Ken McIntyre and adapted from the McIntyre Final 5 used in earlier rugby league eras. It expanded to eight teams to accommodate the modern league size, and is structured to reward regular-season excellence:

  • Top 4 finishers: Get a double-chance in Week 1 (losing the QF doesn’t end your season). They are also guaranteed at least one home final, and avoid the toughest path through Week 1.
  • Bottom 4 finishers (5th-8th): Single-chance only — lose the EF and your season is over.
  • Re-seeding by week: The system re-seeds remaining teams for the Semi Finals — the lowest-ranked surviving team plays the highest-ranked surviving team without a double-chance bye, ensuring the strongest matchups make the Preliminary Finals.

The result is a finals series where:

  • A top-2 team that loses Week 1 still has a path to the Grand Final via Weeks 2 and 3.
  • A 5th-placed team that wins Week 1 plays a Semi Final in Week 2, then a Preliminary Final in Week 3, then the Grand Final in Week 4 — three knockouts to reach Grand Final, all on the road.
  • The longest path possible is four straight wins from 5th–8th: EF, SF, PF, GF.

How Many Wins to Make the NRL Finals?

There is no fixed magic number for making the NRL top 8. The cutoff varies year-to-year based on the spread of the competition, but historical patterns suggest:

  • Safe (top 4 / double-chance): Around 16-18 wins from 27 games — usually a points total of 32-36.
  • Top 8 cutoff: Typically 12-14 wins (24-28 points). Teams sitting 12-12 or 13-12 with a strong points differential routinely sneak into 8th.
  • Hot teams in late: Form across the final 6-8 rounds can decide the bottom of the eight more than the early-season fixture, with percentage often deciding tied teams on points.

NRL Finals Bracket — Visual Guide

Here is how a typical NRL finals run plays out, using ladder positions only:

Position at end of regular season Possible Path to Grand Final
1st QF1 (host 4th) → if win: Preliminary Final (host); if lose: Semi Final (host) → Preliminary Final → Grand Final
2nd QF2 (host 3rd) → if win: Preliminary Final (host); if lose: Semi Final (host) → Preliminary Final → Grand Final
3rd QF2 (away to 2nd) → if win: Preliminary Final (away); if lose: Semi Final (host) → Preliminary Final → Grand Final
4th QF1 (away to 1st) → if win: Preliminary Final (away); if lose: Semi Final (away) → Preliminary Final → Grand Final
5th EF1 (host 8th) → Semi Final → Preliminary Final → Grand Final (3 knockouts after Week 1)
6th EF2 (host 7th) → Semi Final → Preliminary Final → Grand Final
7th EF2 (away to 6th) → Semi Final → Preliminary Final → Grand Final
8th EF1 (away to 5th) → Semi Final → Preliminary Final → Grand Final (longest possible path — four straight wins on the road)

NRL vs AFL Finals — Key Differences

The NRL and AFL both use top-8 finals systems, but the structures differ:

  • Length: Both run for four weeks, with the Grand Final in Week 4.
  • Re-seeding: The NRL’s McIntyre Final 8 system re-seeds for the Semi Finals. The AFL uses a more conventional bracket with locked matchups based on Week 1 results.
  • Grand Final venue: NRL Grand Final is at Accor Stadium in Sydney (contracted to 2046). AFL Grand Final is at the MCG in Melbourne (contracted to 2057).
  • Best on ground medal: NRL awards the Clive Churchill Medal, AFL awards the Norm Smith Medal.
  • Premiership trophy: NRL’s Provan-Summons Trophy vs AFL’s Premiership Cup.

NRL Finals Betting Markets

Australian bookmakers price every NRL finals match deeply. Key markets:

  • Match Winner / Line Betting: Standard for every individual finals match.
  • Total Match Points (Over/Under): Finals matches typically run lower-scoring than regular-season games — read the matchup carefully.
  • Tryscorer markets: First, anytime, last tryscorer for each match.
  • Premiership futures: The headline season-long market — back the 2026 NRL Premier from before the season opens.
  • Clive Churchill Medal: Best on ground for the Grand Final. Halves and fullbacks dominate the historical winners.
  • Same Game Multi: Combine match winner, margin and player props into one bet. See our Same Game Multi guide and NRL multi tips.
  • Reach the Grand Final: Often better value than pure outright Premiership for top-2 seeds.

The top 8 teams on the ladder at the end of the 27-round Telstra Premiership regular season qualify for the four-week NRL finals series.

What is the McIntyre Final 8 system?

The McIntyre Final 8 is the NRL’s finals format. Top 4 play Qualifying Finals (double-chance), bottom 4 of the 8 play Elimination Finals (single-chance), and the bracket re-seeds after each week so the strongest matchups make the Preliminary Finals.

How long does the NRL finals series run?

Four weeks. Week 1: Qualifying and Elimination Finals (4 matches). Week 2: Semi Finals (2 matches). Week 3: Preliminary Finals (2 matches). Week 4: Grand Final (1 match at Accor Stadium).

What’s the difference between Qualifying and Elimination Finals?

Qualifying Finals (1st–4th) are double-chance — losing teams drop to the Semi Finals. Elimination Finals (5th–8th) are single-chance — losing teams are eliminated immediately.
