AFL 2026: Round 13 in Focus
The heart-stoppers headlined it: Adelaide edged Geelong by a single point in the Adelaide Oval rain, and Sydney stole a two-point comeback win over St Kilda at the SCG. The Western Bulldogs produced the upset of the round, clawing back a 27-point deficit to topple Hawthorn, while Fremantle made the biggest statement of all with a 124-point club-record demolition. From a tipping view it was mixed — our headline Bet of the Weekend on Sydney got home (just), but the strong lean on Hawthorn was the round’s casualty, and Geelong fell by the barest margin.
Adelaide pinch the boilover of the round by a single point
Adelaide 75 def. Geelong 74
The shock of the round opened it. In a brutal, rain-soaked contest at Adelaide Oval on Thursday night, the Crows prevailed 11.9 (75) to 10.14 (74) over a Geelong side that 21 of 22 models had tipped — Adelaide’s first win over the Cats in a decade of trying (just their second in the last 11 meetings). Geelong’s 10.14 told the story: the Cats had their chances and butchered them.
Captain Jordan Dawson was immense, a genuine warrior’s performance of 22 disposals, nine tackles, seven marks and three crucial goals to drag his side home. Young gun Dan Curtin backed him with relentless work and a game-saving late mark, and with the Crows down to one on the bench late, Darcy Fogarty’s final-term point proved the decisive score.

Sydney steal a stunning comeback to deny St Kilda
Sydney 104 def. St Kilda 102
Our Bet of the Weekend landed — but nothing like the romp the market implied. St Kilda led by 33 points in the second term and still held a 10-point cushion late, only for a fast-finishing Sydney to reel them in. Jai Serong slotted the winner to clinch a 15.14 (104) to 15.12 (102) thriller, with coach Ross Lyon ruing a “game of centimetres” and Dean Cox praising his side’s belief.
Liam Ryan was the difference in an explosive return from a calf injury, booting a game-high five goals from just 12 disposals and capping it with a trademark hanger. The Saints actually won the clearances 44-34 and will wonder how they let it slip; from a betting view, anyone who took St Kilda on the line was rewarded even in defeat.

Bulldogs stage a stunning fightback to stun Hawthorn
Western Bulldogs 77 def. Hawthorn 71
The result that hurt the tipsters. Twenty of 22 models had Hawthorn, and it was our flagged best bet of the round — but the Bulldogs ignored the formline at the MCG (crowd 59,556), clawing back from a 27-point deficit to win 12.5 (77) to 9.17 (71). The Hawks looked far the better side early, winning the first nine clearances, but their wayward 9.17 in front of goal kept the door ajar and the Dogs barged through it after half-time.
Captain Marcus Bontempelli (23 disposals, two goals, six clearances) and Ed Richards (28 disposals, seven clearances) drove the comeback, with English, Sanders, Dale and Croft also prominent. Jai Newcombe was enormous in a losing side (37 disposals, nine clearances) and Nick Watson kicked three, but it wasn’t enough. The win lifts the Dogs back into the top six with a third straight victory.

Fremantle’s club-record 124-point demolition in Bunbury
Fremantle 155 def. North Melbourne 31
The performance of the round, and it wasn’t close. Fremantle were unanimous favourites and played like it, burying North Melbourne 24.11 (155) to 4.7 (31) at Hands Oval — a 124-point rout that stands as the greatest winning margin in the club’s history and a 12th straight win for the red-hot Dockers.
The goals were shared around: Patrick Voss and Josh Treacy kicked four apiece, with Sam Switkowski and Luke Jackson chipping in three each. Andrew Brayshaw (30 disposals) and Shai Bolton (27) ran the show through the middle, while Murphy Reid (23) and Neil Erasmus (22) piled on the possessions. For the Kangaroos, Parker, Wardlaw and Davies-Uniacke battled hard, but the rebuild has rarely looked further away.

Logan Morris bags seven as Brisbane reclaim the QClash
Brisbane Lions 106 def. Gold Coast 75
After three straight losses, the reigning premiers showed their class. Brisbane led from go to woe at People First Stadium to win 15.16 (106) to 11.9 (75) — a 31-point QClash statement. Logan Morris was unstoppable, the 21-year-old kicking a career-high seven goals (7.4 from 17 disposals and nine marks) to claim the Marcus Ashcroft Medal as best afield.
Lachie Neale dominated the midfield with 37 disposals and 10 clearances, 23 of them before half-time, as the Lions controlled the game. Ben King (four goals) was the lone bright spot for the Suns. It’s the kind of resilient, four-quarter performance that has defined Brisbane’s recent flag charges.

Port Adelaide grind out a tight one in Perth
Port Adelaide 77 def. West Coast 71
Unanimously tipped but made to work for it, Port Adelaide got the job done by six points at Optus Stadium, holding off a West Coast side that refused to roll over. A six-point road win in Perth is never to be sneezed at, and the four points keep Port in touch with the pack — but the Eagles’ fight will give their fans something to build on.

Carlton come from behind to deny brave Essendon
Carlton 72 def. Essendon 67
The round’s third nail-biter. In a low-scoring, scrappy King’s Birthday Eve clash at the MCG (crowd 76,745), Carlton came from 23 points down in the second term to win 10.12 (72) to 10.7 (67) — a fourth straight victory for the Blues. Essendon led for three quarters before the Blues kicked four in a row early in the final term to surge 18 points clear.
Spearhead Harry McKay kicked a game-high three goals, and the turning point was a masterful move to send George Hewett to Bombers ball-winner Sam Durham after the main break. The young Bombers never gave in — late majors to Nate Caddy and Zach Reid dragged them within a goal with under 20 seconds left — but Carlton held on.

The round closes on King’s Birthday Monday with Collingwood v Melbourne at the MCG — we’ll update this wrap once it’s played.
Ladder implications
Fremantle’s 12th straight win keeps the Dockers among the form sides of the competition, while Sydney survived to protect their high standing even if they needed every one of their two points. Hawthorn’s wasteful night opens the door behind them; the Bulldogs’ comeback fires them back into the top six; Brisbane’s QClash win steadies the premiers after a wobble; and West Coast and North Melbourne remain under pressure at the foot of the table.
