Hawthorn vs Western Bulldogs Preview

16th placed Hawthorn will be looking to make it back to back wins after claiming a big scalp in Round 20 by defeating the ladder leaders, Collingwood, by 32 points in what was probably their best win under coach Sam Mitchell, who is in his second season in charge at Waverley.

The Hawks smashed the Magpies in the middle of the ground, winning 18 centre clearances to three, setting it up for the likes of Mitch Lewis, Luke Breust and Brandon Ryan, who combined for seven majors.

On the same weekend, the Western Bulldogs defeated Richmond by 55 points with Marcus Bontempelli firming in Brownlow calculations with a 32 disposal three goal effort, while Bailey Dale, Tom Liberatore and Adam Treloar all had 30+ disposals.

The Bulldogs now sit in 6th position on the ladder with games against West Coast and Geelong to come. But they will need to find a way to match Hawthorn in a number of areas, including contested possessions and clearance, while they will be out to curb the influence of James Sicily, who had 37 disposals in the win against the Magpies from half back.

With a settled backline and some quick ball movement, the Dogs should be able to land the vital four points in their quest for a top eight spot but there might be a few nervous moments down at Launceston for Luke Beveridge’s side.
