Carlton vs Brisbane Lions Preview

Brisbane take on Carlton in the Elimination Final at the GABBA on Saturday September 7. The Lions finished the home and away season in 5th position, earning the right to the home final as the higher ranked side.

Carlton limped to the line and just scraped into the eight, that came despite a Round 24 loss to St Kilda by two points when the Saints’ Jack Higgins snapped a goals with 15 seconds left on the clock.

The Blues have lost six of their past eight games with injuries taking a toll late in the season. However, Michael Voss’ side are expected to regain a number of key players, including Charlie Curnow, Harry McKay and Mitch McGovern. Tom De Koning is another possible inclusion.

Brisbane and Carlton met in the finals series last year with the Lions getting the upper hand in the Preliminary Final. The two sides have not met since the opening round this season, a contest that saw the Blues pull off a stunning comeback to win by a point.

The Lions were slow out of the blocks this season but have the superior form in the second half, winning nine on the trot at one stage before some late losses to GWS and Collingwood. They tuned up for the finals with a 20-point win over Adelaide.

Lachie Neale had 40 disposals in that match and with Will Ashcroft and Hugh McCluggage also in fine form, they should be hard to beat at the GABBA, provided the likes of Joe Daniher, Eric Hipwood and Charlie Cameron can finish off in the forward line.
