Lions vs Dockers Preview

The final game of AFL Round 1 sees the Fremantle Dockers take on the Brisbane Lions. The Dockers enjoy the home ground advantage and will be looking to improve on what they delivered in 2023 after missing the finals, finishing 14th and claiming 10 of their 23 home and away game.

Brisbane were the runners-up in 2023, winning 17 regular season games before missing out by four points. The Lions dropped another close one last weekend when appearing in the opening round against Carlton, surrendering a 46-point lead in the second quarter to go down by a point.

The Lions lost their rebounding half-back, Kaidean Coleman to a season-ending knee injury and he joins the likes of Will Ashcroft and Tom Doedee on the sidelines. Fremantle have plenty of injury concerns with key big-man Sean Darcy out with a knee issue, while Brennan Cox and Michael Frederick face fitness tests.

The Dockers lack of firepower up forward might be a concern here and they could only register eight goals in their practice match against Port Adelaide, going down by 39 points. Caleb Serong, Nat Fyfe and Andrew Brayshaw should find plenty of the footy but a lack of targets might make it difficult for them to kick a winning score, despite enjoying the home-ground advantage.
