Sydney vs Brisbane Preview

Sydney have been the top side all season and qualified for the finals series in top spot, while Brisbane have had to do it the hard way from 5th.

The Swans secured the double chance and have had the benefit of an extra week off during the finals series, which has seen them defeat GWS in the Qualifying Final by six points before sending Port Adelaide on their way with a 36-point in in the Preliminary Final.

Brisbane’s three finals wins have come over Carlton, GWS and Geelong. A feature of their past two wins has been their ability to come back when the chips were down. They trailed GWS by 44 points before strorming home to win by five, while they were 25 points down against Geelong last weekend before getting up by 10 points.

The win over Geelong came at a cost with their ruckman, Oscar McInerney, going down with a dislocated shoulder. He will miss the Grand Final and was a key player the last time the two sides met, which resulted in a two-point win to the Lions at the GABBA back in Round 19.

There are not too many injury concerns at Sydney with Callum Mills the only player of note that might miss. The Swans captain faces a race against time to overcome a hamstring injury. We can expect Darcy Fort to replace McInerney in the ruck, with Joe Daniher pinch hitting against Brodie Grundy.

The battle in the midfield will be a highlight with the likes of Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner and Errol Gulden up against Lachie Neale, Josh Dunkley and Hugh McCluggage.

At either end of the ground, Brisbane’s defenders can shut out the Swans forwards, who have been a bit suspect in the latter half of the year. In the Lions forward half, it will be interesting to see how they structure up with Daniher set to pick up some ruck duties in the middle.

The two sides have been runners-up in the past two years with the Lions just missing out to Collingwood in 2023, while Sydney were smashed by Geelong in 2022 in the decider. The Swans have come a long way since then, while Brisbane will be hungry after their agonising loss last year. The stage is set for a beauty and if the Lions can overcome the loss of McInerney, they can secure a tight and memorable victory.
