Brisbane vs Western Bulldogs Preview

The Lions wasn’t able to rise to the occasion in their heavy qualifying final defeat at the hands of the Demons.

Brisbane never seemed to be able to get the game on their terms despite their strong forward half pressure game. It looked like Daniel McStay’s concussion had an influence on the result, as the Demons dominated in the air, taking 10 more contested marks.

Brisbane is the highest scoring team in the competition, and they’ve proved themselves in the previous month despite last week’s loss. However, Brisbane’s lowest score this season came against the Dogs.

Chris Fagan has instrumented his side into becoming a forced to be reckoned with at the Gabba. The Lions have only lost one game at the Gabba this season, in Round 1 against the Swans.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs got the job done in tough conditions against the optimistic Bombers by 49 points.

After a tight contest in the first half, a dominant and strong defensive second-half display saw them cruise to a comfortable victory. The Dogs kicked 11 of the last 12 goals of the match, as well as keeping the Bombers goalless in the second half.

This match could likely be decided on the ball movement off half-back. Bailey Dale has been influential in that area for the Dogs with his pace in a new role this season. However, the small forwards will need to play their role on limiting Daniel Rich’s penetrating kick out of defence.

The bookies have the dogs as outright favourites for Saturday’s match, but they will strive off that, winning the 2016 premiership despite finishing seventh on the ladder. Eight players from that premiership team are currently in the Bulldogs starting team.

Although the Lions were dismantled by the Demons last time out, I think the home ground advantage will be influential in the Lions progressing into next weeks preliminary final.

Lions vs Dogs Team News

Brisbane will be without Daniel McStay after suffering a nasty concussion in the early stages of the match.

The Western Bulldogs have a relatively fit line-up and will likely only make one change, with Hayden Crozier finishing his concussion protocols. Jason Johannisen is also a chance to return after being a late out last week.

The two sides last met in Round 4, which saw the Dogs win by 19 points.
