Collingwood vs Carlton Preview

The Magpies came from behind to defeat the reigning premiers by 16 points last time out.

Collingwood found themselves 20 points down in the early stages of the final term, but six consecutive goals gave them a handy lead into the dying stages of the match to achieve a stirring triumph.

In this meeting earlier in the season, it was the Magpies smart forward play that dismantled the Blues structure. They were able to create leading lanes for the forwards, with Jordan De Goey starring with four goals.

Meanwhile, the Blues will be keen to get back into the winner’s circle after losing to the Cats by 26 points in a low-scoring affair.

Carlton will be disappointed with their creative play against Geelong, only managing two goals in the first three quarters despite having more scoring shots. A promising sign was Jacob Weitering in defence, who has added some stability recently in a side that sits 15th for points against.

The Blues will have to leave nothing in the tank, with finals still a slight possibility after some shock results around the competition last week. Harry McKay will have to win the duel against Jordan Roughead, and I’d fancy him to do so.

Sam Walsh is having some sort of season and has been dominating the midfield despite the opposition’s best efforts. He finished with 36 disposals and two brilliant goals last week.

This traditional rivalry has been dominated by the Magpies in recent history, who have won the previous five meetings. However, seven of the last eight have been won by the away side and I believe that trope could continue on Sunday.

Magpies vs Blues Team News

The Magpies will make at least one change with Will Kelly suffering an injury last week. Caleb Poulter, Jack Ginnivan, Mason Cox and Tom Wilson have been named in the extended squad.

Will Setterfield has been omitted. Whilst Josh Honey, Liam Jones, Zac Fisher and Lochie O’Brien have been included.

*Teams are yet to be reduced to 22, four omissions still need to be made from the eight-man bench.

The two sides last met in Round 2 this season, which saw the Magpies win by 21 points.
