Hawthorn vs Carlton Preview

The Round 16 encounter sees 15th take on 16th with Carlton ahead of Hawthorn on the ladder thanks to one extra win. The Blues had the bye in Round 15 and snapped a six game losing streak prior to the break with a 59 point win over the Gold Coast Suns in Round 14.

That came courtesy of a nine-goal second term and it was their skipper, Patrick Cripps, that led the way with 27 disposals and three goals, while Harry McKay also snagged three majors. Sam Docherty (32) and Sam Walsh (29) were other major disposal winners.

After a bright start that saw them boot the first three goals in their Round 15 encounter against the Gold Coast, Hawthorn were dismal after that, booting just two more for the game en route to a 67 point defeat.

The Hawks seemed to badly miss their captain, James Sicily, who is one week into a three match suspension. Blake Hardwick was one of few winners on the night with 38 disposals as some of the bad habits that have plagued the Hawks in 2023 crept back in.

Sam Mitchell’s side will be looking to bounce back and did win three of their past four prior to the Suns loss. They were fresh off the bye in Round 15 and became the 10th of 12 sides to lose the week after the break. This time it is Carlton’s turn and it will be interesting to see how the Blues fare after enjoying the week off.

This is a tricky one to predict and if we look at each sides most recent game it has to be Carlton that get the points here. But Hawthorn have shown good signs and their young outfit should be more competitive back at the MCG.
