Carlton vs Hawthorn Preview
The Blues couldn’t get the win they were craving against the Demons, falling to a 26-point defeat.
Carlton has struggled with consistency so far this season, which could be costly as they look to make an optimistic finals finish. They’ve only won one match in the last five matches, coming against Essendon.
The Blues have struggled with their defensive structure over the past month, conceding more than 90 points in seven of their nine matches this season, leaving them to outgun their opponents rather than restricting them to a score.
Although they’ve had troubles defensively, they will be ecstatic with the season that Harry McKay is having, banging another three goals against the Demons to extend his lead in the Coleman medal race.
Meanwhile, the Hawks suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of the winless Kangaroos last time out.
The loss against North Melbourne was at no fault of their own. Although they’ve made wonderful comebacks so far this season, they coughed up a 32-point lead to lose a valuable four points. It was the third time in four seasons that Hawthorn have given a winless side their first win of the season, those coming against North Melbourne (R9, 2021), Adelaide (R15, 2021) and Brisbane (R9, 2018).
However, Carlton is one of Alastair Clarkson’s favourite sides to come up against, with the last 18 meetings resulting in 17 wins. The last time Carlton defeated Hawthorn at the MCG was in 2000.
Although Hawthorn has dominated this tie for years, I believe the Blues have what it takes to take the four points in this one.
Blues vs Hawks Team News
The Blues will be forced to make at least one change with David Cunningham suffering a bad knee injury. Jack Silvagni should return after his concussion, whilst Jack Martin is still a week away.
After a disappointing performance, you are likely to see a host of changes. Daniel Howe, Emerson Jeka and Josh Morris are all chances to come into the side after strong performances in the VFL. Shaun Burgoyne’s ankle injury has troubled him but could start if he passes a fitness test.
The two sides last met in Round 9 last season which saw the Hawks win by 31 points.
