Carlton vs Hawthorn Preview

This shapes as a mini Elimination Final with the two sides amongst the bottleneck for spots in the top eight. Carlton are 8th on the ladder and clinging on, while Hawthorn are one win behind and sit in 10th.

Both sides blew some golden opportunities to secure a win last weekend. Carlton came back from five goals down in the last quarter of their match against Collingwood before Mitch McGovern shanked his shot after the siren that would have seen his side win.

Hawthorn squandered a 28-point lead in the last term in their match against GWS, going down by two points. They can ill-afford another loss in their quest for an unlikely finals spot.

Sam Mitchell’s side will need to defend better, particularly inside their defensive 50. Harry McKay will be focal point up forward for Carlton, while it remains to be seen if Charlie Curnow lines up after spraining his ankle in the loss to the Pies.

At the other end of the ground, Hawthorn will need a lift from their small forwards, who were a bit down on previous weeks in the loss to the Giants. The young Hawks have never faced a bigger game but have shown they can handle the occasion in front of big crowds at the MCG this season. Expect this one to be a see-sawing clash that could go either way.
