Swans vs Blues Preview

Carlton return to the finals action for the first time since 2013 and head into the Elimination Final encounter against Sydney at the MCG.

But it won’t be easy against the Swans, who have a clear edge in experience in September matches. John Longmire’s side made the Grand Final in 2022 and won two finals heading into the decider last year, including one over Melbourne at the MCG this time a year ago.

Both sides looked down and out during the season but have come home with a flourish. Carlton won nine matches in a row, including victories over Collingwood, Port Adelaide and Melbourne. They lost their Round 24 encounter against GWS, in what was essentially a dead-rubber for the Blues, while they were without a number of key players, including Patrick Cripps.

Sydney won seven in a row before also missing out in Round 24, going down to Melbourne by 21 points. That came despite a brilliant performance by Errol Gulden, who had 42 disposals and two goals.

Charlie Curnow will be a focal point up forward and took his season’s tally of goals to 78, claiming the Coleman Medal in the process. His three goals weren’t enough in the 42-point loss against the Giants.

For the loser of this match, it is farewell to season 2023. Despite their last start hiccup, I am keen on the Blues to advance to the next round of the finals where they will play the loser of the Collingwood and Melbourne Qualifying Final.
