Collingwood vs Brisbane Preview
Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions clash for premiership glory in the AFL Grand Final and it is the Magpies that head in as slight favourites.
Craig McRae’s side finished the home and away season in top position on the ladder with 18 wins, while Brisbane were 2nd with 17 victories. Both sides have won their two finals matches to qualify for the playoff.
In the Preliminary Final, Collingwood held on by a solitary point to defeat GWS and it was Jordan de Goey that starred with 34 disposals, while Dan McStay booted two goals. However, the former Lion, McStay, was subbed out with knee injury and will miss the Grand Final. Billy Frampton is a possible replacement, while Taylor Adams faces a race against time in his bid to return from a hamstring injury.
Brisbane were slow out of the blocks against Carlton in their Preliminary Final, conceding the first five goals before clawing their way back to win by 16 points. It was some of their unheralded names that rose to the occasion with Oscar McInerney and Lincoln McCarthy booting two goals alongside Joe Daniher, while Josh Dunkley did the job on Patrick Cripps. He may play on de Goey in the Grand Final.
The Lions defeated Collingwood on both occasions that they met during the regular season. One of those games was at the GABBA, while the other was at Marvel Stadium and the Pies were undermanned due to injury that night.
Brisbane will need to overcome their poor MCG record that has seen them win just one of their past 14 at the venue. The win was in last years finals series against Melbourne. The Lions are six of 12 away from the GABBA in 2023. Collingwood have won 13 of 16 at the MCG in 2023.
With that in mind, as well as the Magpies greater experience at playing in front of big crowds at the home of footy, I am going with the Pies to chalk up their 16th premiership, joining Carlton and Essendon with the most Grand Final wins.
Lions vs Magpies Stats
