Essendon vs GWS Preview

The Bombers avoided a scare against the Kangaroos last time out, prevailing by 18 points.

Ben Rutten’s side was lacklustre in the first half, playing with virtually no pressure, allowing the Kangaroos to freely use the ball at their own will. However, an improved second-half dragged them over the line in an up and down performance.

Jake Stringer put pen to paper in a three-year deal during the week after his four-goal performance last time out. He has seen a lot of midfield time with the absence of Dylan Shiel and Andrew McGrath, but with Shiel returning he may see fewer midfield minutes.

They will be out for vengeance after close losses against the Giants in the previous two meetings. You can expect a physical encounter with both sides fighting for a top-eight finish.

Meanwhile, the Giants lost their second match on the trot against cross-town rivals Sydney.

In a game of two halves, GWS started the brighter of the two sides, gathering a lead of almost 40 points during the second term, but a disappointing second-half collapse saw their handy lead diminished.

Two losses on the trot against Gold Coast (one point) and Sydney (26 points) have left Leon Cameron’s side in a precarious position, with a loss almost ruining their chances of finals football. They currently sit two games behind seventh and two points off the four teams ahead of them all fighting for two spots.

The previous three meetings have been decided by a kick, and I believe you can expect another tight clash on Sunday night, with the Bombers edging this one.

Bombers vs Giants Team News

Essendon have named David Zaharakis, Nick Bryan and midfielder Dylan Shiel in the extended squad with no preliminary omissions.

The Giants will be without Jeremy Finlayson and Matt Flynn on Sunday. Lachie Whitfield and Shane Mumford are the most notable inclusions.

*Teams are yet to be reduced to 22, four omissions still need to be made from the eight-man bench.

The two sides last met in Round 8 this season, which saw the Giants win by two points.
