Essendon vs GWS Giants Preview

The Saturday twilight clash sees 5th placed Essendon play host to the 3rd placed GWS Giants at Marvel Stadium. The Bombers have won five of their eight games and have drawn another, while GWS have won six of their eight.

Essendon ventured over to Perth in Round 8 and held out a fast finishing West Coast side by six points. They had Zach Merrett to thank for that result with the skipper starring with 29 disposals and three goals. Darcy Parish and Nic Martin also found plenty of the footy with 30+ disposals, while Kyle Langford chimed in with three majors.

GWS will be looking to rebound after a disappointing 29-point loss at the hands of their cross-town rivals, Sydney. The Giants loss was further soured with the injury to Tom Green and the star midfielder will be sorely missed.

Sam Taylor and Stephen Coniglio are a chance to return and their possible inclusions will be a key factor. Coniglio can help cover the loss of Green in the middle, while Josh Kelly and Lachie Whitfield should provide plenty of drive.

The Bombers have a stack of options in the middle and up forward but will need to overcome a poor recent record against GWS, having lost four of their past five to the Giants. They were blown away by 136 points the last time the two sides played with Jesse Hogan booting nine goals.

But Essendon’s recruit, Ben McKay, will line up on the forward this time around and it is worth noting that Essendon did take out the most recent clash between the two sides at Marvel Stadium.
