Hawthorn vs Essendon Preview

The Hawks are coming off a huge surprise win against the Swans as $5.50 outsiders.

Alastair Clarkson’s side was able to frustrate the Swans ball movement, as a result, they went at 32% efficiency inside 50. Hawthorn dominating the contested ball, thanks to former Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell, who finished the match with 34 disposals and a goal.

These sides last met in a thrilling encounter in Round 1 of this season, where the Hawks came back from a 39-point deficit to win the match by one point. They will never be out of the contest on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Bombers will have the benefit of a week off after losing to the Tigers in the traditional Dreamtime clash.

Essendon found themselves five goals down late in the third quarter against the reigning premiers but managed to hit the front midway through the last term, threatening to cause a second consecutive major scalp. However, a disappointing final 15 mins saw them fall to 39-point losers.

This is a huge match for the Bombers, who will need to win this game to stay within touching distance of the top eight. It will be their first game in Tasmania since 1992 when they defeated Fitzroy by three points.

Former dual W.S. Crichton Medal Zach Merrett signed a monster six-year contract due to the positive direction the club is heading in. A newfound belief and optimism has landed at the Bombers yet again. This leaves Darcy Parish and Jake Stringer as the big-name Bombers out of contract.

There’s some good news at the selection table for the Dons, with Devon Smith, Peter Wright and Sam Draper all named amongst the extended inclusions.

Although the Hawks pulled off an upset last time out, I believe the Bombers have been impressive in the past month and should win this one.

Hawks vs Bombers Team News

The Hawks will make at least two changes with Harry Morrison and James Worpel missing. Conor Nash, Emerson Jeka, James Cousins, Lachlan Bramble and Tyler Brockman have been named as inclusions.

Essendon will be making five changes with David Zaharakis, Andrew McGrath, Alec Waterman, Aaron Francis and Patrick Ambrose all out. Devon Smith, Peter Wright and Sam Draper are amongst the inclusions. Including Zach Reid who is part of the 2021 draftee trio, as well as Sam Durham, who was picked up in the mid-season draft from the Richmond VFL.

*Teams are yet to be reduced to 22, four omissions still need to be made from the eight-man bench.

The two sides last met in Round 1 this season, which saw the Hawks win by one point.
