Melbourne vs Essendon Preview

Essendon enjoy a great chance of holding their spot in the top four when they take on an injury depleted Melbourne lineup at the MCG on Saturday night.

The Bombers claimed their 10th win of the season last weekend with an impressive 92-80 upset over Collingwood last Friday, led by Zach Merrett’s 30 disposals, 15 score involvements, and one goal. The Bombers have lost just one of their last eight games when Merrett records 25+ disposals.

Despite the continued absence of Christian Petracca, Melbourne also secured a victory last weekend, defeating West Coast 112-58 at the MCG. However, the win came at a significant cost as Max Gawn suffered an ankle injury that will sideline him for Saturday. Gawn was also absent when these clubs last met, a game in which Essendon upset Melbourne 104-77 during Gather Round 2023, with Merrett again starring with 35 disposals and 550 meters gained.

The Bombers will be looking to improve their 1-4 record from their last five matches against Melbourne in Victoria. They can do that and the pressure on the Demons will mount with the 2021 premiers staring down the barrel of missing finals.
