Melbourne vs Essendon Preview

Melbourne have started 2022 the same way they left as reigning premiers last season. They passed tests in their opening two matches against the Western Bulldogs (26 points) and most recently Gold Coast (13 points).

The latter wasn’t as easy to come by as you’d suggest. Simon Goodwin’s outfit never gained a substantial lead but showcased their ability to hold one. Christian Petracca was the best on the ground backing up his Round 1 performance and was also pivotal in their 11-point triumph over the Bombers last season.

Meanwhile, although the Bombers improved upon their lacklustre opening round performance against the Cats, it still wasn’t enough to pass premiership contenders Brisbane.

It could’ve been a different result if Ben Rutten’s side capitalised on their early dominance and late clear-cut chances. Essendon more than doubled the Lions behinds in just a four-goal loss.

That wasn’t the only bad news to come out of the loss, with midfield talisman Zach Merrett suffering an ankle syndesmosis injury in the closing minutes to rule him out for the better part of two months. Players like Andrew McGrath, Jye Caldwell and Dylan Shiel will need to stand up and deliver in his absence.

The Demons look like they are going to be the side to beat again this year, and I don’t see the ravaged Bombers getting anywhere close to the four points in the first instalment of a Friday night doubleheader.
