Essendon vs Melbourne Preview

The Bombers kept their finals hopes alive with a nervy 13-point triumph over traditional rivals Hawthorn.

Essendon fans would’ve been worried in the last quarter that they would be on the wrong side of another tight tussle against the Hawks. However, Jake Stringer had different ideas, being the deciding factor, with four goals in 29 disposals to prove his potential contract worth.

Ben Rutten has transformed a predicted fragile bottom four side into genuine finals contenders, with their offensive work being a highlight. The Bombers are the second-highest scoring team in the competition this season.

Meanwhile, the Demons lost their second match this season against the struggling Magpies.

Melbourne was outmanoeuvred by a Collingwood outfit that was keen to send their departing coach off on the right note. Despite possessing one of the best midfields in the competition, they lost the clearances on the day by a margin of 10. The midfield battle on the day will be influential in the result.

You can expect them to clog the middle of the ground in an attempt to frustrate the Bombers pace off half-back, showcased by Nick Hind’s goal of the season nomination last week.

An intriguing matchup will be the ruck duel around the ground, with young gun Sam Draper clashing heads with the best ruckman in the competition, in Max Gawn.

This has the makings to be an instant classic, with two of the most exciting teams in the competition battling it out. Although the Demons lost last week, I have faith in them to return to winning ways.

Bombers vs Demons Team News

It’s hard to see the Bombers making too many changes with their good form in the past month. Alec Waterman and David Zaharakis are fit to return, but don’t expect both of them to return.

The Demons will likely make one change with Jack Viney returning from injury.

The two sides last met in Round 18 last season, which saw the Demons win by 19 points.
