North Melbourne vs Essendon Preview

Essendon enjoy a golden opportunity to land a win in their bid to claw back into the eight. The Bombers come up against a North Melbourne side that have now lost 18 games in a row.

A win for the red and black will see them make ground on the rivals above them, should results go their way. Brad Scott’s side are in 12th position on the ladder, just one win and percentage behind 6th placed Western Bulldogs.

But they will need to improve on what they displayed last weekend when taking on another struggling side. The Bombers nearly threw away their contest against West Coast before a late Kyle Langford goal saw them scrape through by a point.

Langford booted five goals in the win, while Darcy Parish, Nick Hind and Zach Merrett all found plenty of the footy.

North Melbourne come off a 32 point loss to Melbourne, despite leading by as much as 33 earlier in the game. The Kangaroos were overrun in the second half. Eddie Ford booted three goals, while Jack Ziebell wound back the clock with 33 disposals. Luke Davies Uniacke, Jy Simpkin and Bailey Scott all had 25+ disposals.

That group of players will need big performances if the Roos are to trouble Essendon. Their depth is likely to be an issue, while their lack of firepower to kick a winning score will also count against. It is worth noting that North Melbourne pushed Essendon the last time they played with that game coming earlier this season, resulting in a Bombers win by six points.

But I am expecting the Dons to be switched on given what happened last week and with what is at stake. They should get the job done comfortably in this one.
